Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his India debut in the UK trip? BCCI secretary sends message to Indian selectors

After becoming the youngest recipient of the Orange Cap award in the IPL 2026 season, with 776 runs to his name, Sooryavanshi could soon make his senior international debut for India.

At the start of the month, India are set to host Afghanistan for a one-off Test match and a three-match ODI series, where Sooryavanshi did not make the cut.

However, after handing over the Orange Cap to the RR sensation, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia hinted that the southpaw could be in the Indian squad for the white-ball tour in the UK later this month, where the Men in Blue will face Ireland and England in T20Is and ODI series.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Saikia said:

"Vaibhav is a new wonder kid in Indian cricket, and I'm sure he will also take the world by storm in the coming days. And all our selectors are part of the IPL tournament. Everybody, all the selectors, are watching these matches very closely, and in most cases, they are also present at the venue."

The BCCI boss also added: "So, in the upcoming selection meetings for the Indian team's UK trip, I'm sure the selectors will do whatever is necessary and is in his best interest, given the way he has performed. Many other players performed exceedingly well.

"But Vaibhav is exceptional, and I am very happy that God is kind, that a new wonder kid has been presented to the Indian cricket scene at this stage, and that he will definitely cross the boundaries very soon."

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ready for ODI and Test cricket after conquering T20s and IPL

After dominating the best bowlers in the world in the recently-concluded IPL, where he proved his credentials in the T20 format, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is now ready to play at the senior level in the ODI and Test formats.

At the end of the IPL 2026 season, Ashwin had jokingly mentioned how Sooryavanshi did not hit too many fours during the IPL season. In response, the youngster said: "Yes, I will have to play on the ground because the next assignment is in a one-day format. I have practised a lot with a red ball, but no one has seen me do that, but they will soon.

"People think I love to hit every ball, but this is the T20 format, and coaches give me a free hand to go all guns blazing. And I hit the ball only because I know I can hit them, and it isn't out of compulsion."

The teenager also expressed his desire to represent India in the Test format, as he added: "I want to play Test cricket, because my father also taught me that it is the ultimate format."
