Patrick Mahomes is looking for a big bounce-back in 2026.

The two-time league MVP saw his 2025 campaign end prematurely after suffering a torn ACL in a December loss to the Chargers. That loss clinched Kansas City's first missed postseason berth since Mahomes became the starter in 2018, and the Chiefs stumbled to a 6-11 finish down the stretch without him.

While Mahomes is progressing well in his recovery and was cleared for full participation in training camp, Kansas City isn't taking any unnecessary risks in its preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday. Coach Andy Reid confirmed Thursday that Mahomes will not play in the game.

Patrick Mahomes will not play on Saturday, per Coach Reid.

Justin Fields, Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun will split up the game.

Will Justin Fields start at QB for Chiefs instead?

With Mahomes not suiting up, Fields is likely to get the nod on Saturday. Reid also said the former first-round pick will split reps in the game with rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and fellow backup Chris Oladokun, who started two games when Mahomes was injured last season.
