When Haughton boys basketball coach Robert Price recently left the school to coach alongside LSU-Shreveport's men’s basketball coach Kyle Blankenship, Haughton principal David Haynie had to act quickly with the start of school just days away.
So, the well-connected principal did what any sensible administrator would do: He turned to a veteran coach in his backyard to fill the void. Haynie asked former Haughton coach Terry Josting, 61, who has been teaching at the school, to fill in as the head coach on a short-term basis.
“I’m excited. I have met with the team and they seem like a great group of guys,” Josting said. “I talked with my family about it and they were so excited.”

Josting stepped away from coaching in March 2022 due to a health issue. He was willing and able when Haynie gave him the call.
“We talked and I told him I would do it for a year to help him out,” Josting said. “That way he has more time to find someone for the long term. I still planning on retiring after this year so what a way to finish up my career.”
Josting began his career in 1991 as the girls coach at Bossier while also assisting Bobby Joe Rusley’s Bearkats for a season. He moved to Parkway in 1997 first as a boys assistant, then as the head coach. The 1999-2000 Panthers were 32-6 and advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals. He spent 14 seasons at Parkway before going to Lakeside for a year to assist in football and basketball. He joined Norm Picou’s boys staff at Southwood for a season before moving over to assist legendary Southwood girls coach Steve McDowell the year after the Lady Cowboys won their 10th and last state title.
McDowell resigned his position just before the start of school, so Josting took over the Southwood girls for four seasons in 2013 and won three district titles. The Parkway and Louisiana Tech graduate has been at Haughton since 2017, but didn’t coach his first two years there. The health issue was a setback to his coaching career.
“I’m feeling good,” he said. “I wish I could lace up my sneakers and run up and down the floor with them.”
