In conjunction with the United States celebrating its 250th birthday this year, USA Today Co. newspapers in Michigan have been looking at some of the top athletes to come out of each region in the state.
Over the next several weeks, the Lansing State Journal will unveil some of the top athletes to come out of Greater Lansing. We will take a daily look at one of the top 10 male or female athletes from the region. These athletes are determined by more than just high school performance. Accomplishments in college and as a professional were also taken into consideration when determining the area's best.
The athletes are not ranked in order. Here is a look at our latest female athlete.
The Mason graduate is one of the most decorated women’s basketball players to come from the region and is one of five players from Greater Lansing to be selected in the WNBA draft. Her success started in high school when she was the Miss Basketball runner-up as a senior in 2000. Haynie followed with a stellar career at Michigan State where she helped the women’s basketball team to a program-best national runner-up finish in 2005. Haynie ended her MSU career as the Spartans’ all-time leader in assists and was one four players in Big Ten history at the time to finish with at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 steals.

Haynie then was taken ninth in the 2005 WNBA draft by the Sacramento Monarchs. She won a WNBA title as a rookie and appeared in 160 games over five seasons in the league. Haynie also played professionally overseas before going into coaching. She is currently the head women’s basketball coach at Central Michigan.
