FOXBOROUGH — Orlando Gill's penalty kick heroics against Germany may never have happened if a controversial decision didn't go Paraguay's way in extra time.
Jonathan Tah headed the ball into the net off a corner in the 102nd minute for Die Mannschaft. With the game's deliberate pace to that point, one goal seemed enough to hand the Germans their first World Cup knockout win since 2014.
Instead, referee Jalal Jayed of Morocco went to VAR to check the decision. The replay showed an interference foul committed by Waldemar Anton against the keeper Gill during the corner that led to the goal. The score remained level, which allowed the match to proceed to penalties.
Gill made two saves during the shootout, which Paraguay won 4-3 to advance after the 1-1 score at full time.
"I feel bad for Jonathan Tah, but that’s the way things go in football," manager Julian Nagelsmann said. "In my opinion, (it) was very controversial that the header was ruled out by the VAR."
"I feel for everybody. I'm very sad," midfielder Nadiem Amiri said in English. "It was a shocking end from the game. At the moment, it's very difficult to find the right words."
Jalal Jayed of Morocco was the referee at Boston Stadium in the World Cup Round of 32.
Tatiana Guaman from Nicaragua handled VAR responsibilities assisted by Hamza El Fariq (Morocco) and Alshehri Abdullah (Saudi Arabia).
Morocco is still alive in the World Cup bracket and could face Paraguay in the quarterfinals if both teams win out. Paraguay will await the winner of France and Sweden, while Morocco faces the Netherlands in the Round of 32. The winner of that game faces Canada in the Round of 16.
