The Philadelphia Eagles brought Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter back for a second interview, reportedly the second candidate brought back along with Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion.
Cooter has been Shane Steichen's offensive coordinator for the past three seasons, but the Eagles can offer him a chance that isn't available in Indianapolis.
The Eagles need a play caller. Former Colts coordinator Nick Sirianni hasn't called the plays since the early days of his tenure in Philadelphia. Steichen handles those duties in Indianapolis, and NFL teams are often comfortable allowing a coordinator to move for the same position if it comes with a promotion in terms of responsibilities.
Cooter, 41, has been a play caller before, most notably with Matthew Stafford in Detroit for three seasons, and play-calling responsibilities are often seen by NFL teams as an important line on a coaching candidate's resume.
The longtiime NFL assistant has not been a candidate for head coaching jobs in this cycle. Indianapolis defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo interviewed with the Giants, Titans and Bills, but those three teams hired John Harbaugh, Robert Saleh and Joe Brady, respectively, ensuring the Colts would not have a change on the defensive side of the ball.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard has already acknowledged that a potential promotion would be the only reason Indianapolis would change coordinators this offseason.
If Cooter left to become Sirianni's offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, Indianapolis has a potential replacement on staff in Alex Tanney, who is the team's pass game coordinator and has known Daniel Jones since his rookie season in New York.
