The final week of the winter high school sports regular season is upon us in the Greater Taunton area.
Last week, seven Greater Taunton area wrestlers were crowned South Sectional champions while a Taunton basketball player scored his 1,000th career point and a Bridgewater-Raynham runner scored a pair of MIAA Division 2 titles. Taunton wrestling topped Bristol-Plymouth in the annual Taunton City Championship while Bridgewater-Raynham hockey took home the MLK Tournament title and Taunton hockey scored back-to-back high-scoring wins.
The Taunton Daily Gazette High School Boys Athlete of the Week for Feb. 2-8 is Bridgewater-Raynham indoor track's Gabe Ocampo, receiving 62% of the vote. Dighton-Rehoboth basketball's Maddex Mendoza came in second with 37% while Bridgewater-Raynham basketball's Mateo Jackson received 1% to finish third.
Now is your chance to choose the Taunton Daily Gazette High School Boys Athlete of the Week for Feb. 9-15, with polls open through noon, Sunday, Feb. 22. Only players from teams that submitted stats to the Gazette or made them readily available online can be featured in this poll. Scores and stats can be submitted via email to [email protected]. Who is the Taunton Daily Gazette H.S. Boys Athlete of the Week for Feb. 9-15?
Thielker scored 22 points, including the 1,000th of his career, against Milford.
Aisiku had 27 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals against Old Colony.
Vallarelli had a pair of goals and 4 assists against Stoughton/Brockton.
Buffington was crowned the 215 lb. champion at the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals.
Rinke was crowned the 190 lb. champion at the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals.
Chisholm was crowned the 126 lb. champion at the MIAA Division 3 South Sectionals.
Grenon was crowned the 120 lb. champion at the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals.
Blake was crowned champion in the 600 meter (1:23.95, personal best) and as the final leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay team at the MIAA Division 2 Championship.
