Entering Friday afternoon's game at American Family Field in Milwaukee, the Colorado Rockies might not have been favored to win any game at all in this three-game series.
Well, the Rockies put that talk to rest.
Starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano went five-plus innings and the Colorado bullpen, which hasn't always been great this season, kept the Milwaukee Brewers off the scoreboard. Kyle Karros went 2-for-4 and Jake McCarthy added a ringing triple.
Put it all together and the Rockies captured a 5-2 win, beating up Brewers starter Shane Drohan along the way.
As the Rockies came out and put things together in a positive, winning way on Friday, can they come out and do the same on Saturday night?
Robert Gasser gets the start for Milwaukee in the second game. Gasser is 2-4 with a 4.91 ERA. In his past three starts, Gasser has a 5.74 ERA, gave up 15 hits, struck out 12, and walked just one. He's held left-handed hitters to a .205 batting average in his career, while right-handed hitters against Gasser are hitting .264.
Those numbers are not outstanding, yet they are markedly better than the Rockies' starter on Saturday.
Ryan Feltner gets the ball from Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer. How's Feltner doing? Maybe you ought to grab a cup of coffee or a Diet Coke to check these numbers out.
He's 3-4 overall with a 5.48 ERA. Now, in his last three starts, Feltner has put together a really bad 9.95 ERA. Feltner has given up 19 hits and struck out 15, but he's also walked eight batters. Frankly, that's eight batters too many. In the month of July during his career, though, Feltner has a career 4.43 ERA.
This is a game where Feltner has to simply wash away his previous starts and focus on keeping the Brewers' offense, whether it's Christian Yelich or someone else, off the bases as much as possible.
Colorado's offense has to jump on Gasser early and often. If the Rockies can have Hunter Goodman, who still has a lot of chatter around his name as the MLB Trade Deadline nears, McCarthy, and even Cole Carrigg deliver some big hits, then the Rockies will be in a good position to win another game.
After Saturday night's game at American Family Field, the Rockies and Brewers will close out their three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
The Rockies didn't gain any ground on the San Francisco Giants on Friday night after the Giants pulled off a 10th-inning, 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Oracle Park. Colorado is still in last place, but they can gain ground on the Giants by winning a few more games now and avoiding a long losing streak.
Let's see what happens on Saturday night, Rockies fans. This game will be shown on Rockies.TV and carried on KOA radio in the Denver metropolitan area. The Rockies' radio broadcast also will be available on SiriusXM.
