Mexico has already clinched their spot in the knockout round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making their upcoming match against Czechia pivotal for the visitors. Czechia will be fighting to keep its World Cup hopes alive as it takes on the tournament hosts in Mexico City on Wednesday.
Mexico became the first country to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Korea. Although opportunities were limited in the first half, Luis Romo broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, sending El Tri fans into a frenzy and securing their place in the round of 32.
Czechia, on the other hand, is facing a do-or-die situation after a 2-1 defeat to Korea in their opening match and after a 1-1 draw with South Africa in their most recent outing. Their clash with South Africa seemed promising when Michal Sadílek found the net in the sixth minute, but fortunes changed late in the game. A long-range effort from South Africa’s Thapelo Maseko struck the hand of Czech midfielder Pavel Sulc, resulting in a penalty. Teboho Mokoena converted the penalty in the 83rd minute, leaving Czechia with just one point from two matches.
