New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was recognized among the best players at his position on Monday.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler in the network’s ranking of the top 10 quarterbacks for 2026, Maye ranked No. 8 overall.
Fowler wrote:
”Maye's Super Bowl run and near-MVP performance elevated him into the elite discussion, though still on the fringes,” Fowler said. “He appeared on more than 60% of the ballots and earned many fifth-place votes.”
Maye was ranked behind Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen (No. 1) and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (No. 2), who jockeyed for the top overall spot determined by votes from league executives, coaches and scouts.
Los Angeles Rams QB and reigning AP NFL MVP Matthew Stafford (No. 3), Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (No. 4), Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (No. 5), Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (No. 6) and Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert (No. 7) were also ranked above Maye, last season’s AP NFL MVP runner-up.
Maye showed himself to be a volume passer and one of the best deep-ball throwers in the NFL in 2025, and he led the league in completion rate at 72 percent. Given that last season was his breakout year, Maye being ranked behind several veteran quarterbacks with MVP or Super Bowl hardware under their belt, along with more years having proven their level of excellence, holds weight, though he may have done more to rank somewhat higher.
Nonetheless, Maye is among the best in the league at the position and has more room to grow in 2026.
