In an alternate universe, Dennard Wilson would have already been the defensive coordinator for John Harbaugh.
He would have also been the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants in another.
Those two timelines have finally come together and become reality.
Harbaugh is expected to tab Wilson as his new defensive coordinator with the Giants, a source confirmed to NorthJersey.com and The Record. NFL Network was first to report. The Giants are also set to hire Chris Horton as their special teams coordinator under Harbaugh; those two were together with the Baltimore Ravens.
Two years ago, when Wink Martindale and Brian Daboll had their falling out with the Giants, Daboll had Wilson - then the DB coach for Harbaugh with the Ravens - as one of his top choices at DC.
Wilson was also consideration to be the DC in Baltimore when Mike Macdonald left to become the head coach in Seattle, but he decided to go to Tennessee as DC with longtime friend Ran Carthon, then the GM of the Titans.
Here's a look at the 43-year-old Wilson and what he brings to the Giants as Harbaugh continues to build his coaching staff:
Wilson's experience on the coaching sideline goes back quite a bit with stops in St. Louis with the Rams, the Jets, the Eagles and the Ravens before joining the Titans most recently as their defensive coordinator.
He spent a season as the Ravens defensive backs coach in 2023 prior to joining Tennessee.
Wilson broke into the league as a coach with the Rams as the defensive quality control for Gregg Williams, one of the mentors who helped shape his approach to the game. He counts the uber-aggressive Williams and Todd Bowles, with whom he worked with the Jets, as influences.
"From Day 1, you press everything," Wilson said in his introductory news conference with the Titans. "Period."
Wilson played for Williams in Washington, and he actually began his post-playing career in player personnel with the Bears. He was a pro scout for Chicago from 2008-11 and was praised for having an eye for talent.
Wilson has a track record of getting the most out of his players, helping those who are best on the back end get the most out of their talent. His pass defenders have been among tops in the league.
With the Jets, Wilson helped Jamal Adams become a star on his way to three Pro Bowl invites and a first team All-Pro nod. Safety Marcus Maye developed into an impact player in his secondary, too.
Wilson joined the Eagles in 2021 and Darius Slay returned to Pro Bowl form, earning that distinction in both of their years together and James Bradberry, a year after leaving the Giants, garnered second team All-Pro honors. With the Ravens, Wilson helped ascending safety Kyle Hamilton become the best safety in the NFL and first team All-Pro honors.
