No surprise here, but the Indianapolis Colts would like to sign free agent wide receiver Alec Pierce to a "long-term" deal.

During GM Chris Ballard's season-ending press conference, he mentioned that Pierce would be a priority this offseason.

On Monday at the NFL combine, the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero provided an update on where things stand with Daniel Jones, another key free agent for the Colts, and he also brought up Pierce as well.

"They also have another big-ticket free agent-to-be in wide receiver Alec Pierce, who Daniel Jones loves," Pelissero said. "If Jones ends up getting a deal, then the tag would be an option if they can't work out a deal with Pierce, who they'd also like to sign for the long-term."

Pierce is going to be in-store for a big payday this offseason. Ideally, the Colts likely don't want him hitting the open market.

This could mean that the franchise tag, or perhaps even the transition tag, is in play to prevent that from happening. The goal isn't to have Pierce play out the 2026 season on one of those tags, but rather it would extend the negotiating window for Pierce and the Colts to reach a long-term deal.

The Colts took a similar approach in 2024 with Michael Pittman, when the franchise tag was initially utilized before the two reached a multi-year agreement.

The NFL's legal tampering period prior to free agency opens on March 9th, and the deadline to apply the franchise or transition tag is March 3rd.
