With Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Alec Pierce set to be a free agent, one NFL insider believes that he will head to another team.
ESPN's Dan Graziano predicted the landing spots for the top free agents. When it came to Pierce, Graziano selected the LA Chargers -- not the Colts.
"Indy would still like to have Pierce back," Graziano wrote, "but after leading the league in yards per reception each of the past two years, he'll have a market that could drive the price up beyond that mark. This puts him right behind the franchise number but with more guarantees than just one year."
By placing the transition tag on Daniel Jones, Pierce is now set to hit the open market. The Colts, of course, would like to get a long-term deal done before Monday's legal tampering period begins to prevent that, but Pierce recently said that he owes it to himself to explore all options.
How GM Chris Ballard chose to handle the Jones and Pierce contracts was risky, and while the Colts may have the best intentions of bringing Pierce back, anything can happen in free agency.
After leading the NFL in yards per catch the last two seasons, along with eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark in 2025, Pierce is in store for a big payday. He has developed into much more than just a downfield threat.
In addition to the Colts competing with different contract figures that will be thrown at Pierce, also a part of his decision-making process is signing with a team that has a stable quarterback situation. The Colts hope to provide that by signing Jones to a long-term deal, but other teams may have more to offer in that regard as well.
Graziano also projects that Pierce signs a three-year, $80 million deal, with $55 million guaranteed.
