The Indianapolis Colts have placed the transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones. So what does that mean for wide receiver Alec Pierce?
Each offseason, every team has the ability to either place the franchise tag or the transition tag on one of their pending free agents. However, only one of those tags can be utilized.
So with Jones receiving the transition tag, that means that Pierce is now set to hit the open market.
Now, the Colts and Pierce could still come to terms on a long-term deal prior to the NFL's legal tampering period opening on March 9th. According to Jordan Schultz, the "hope" for both the Colts and Pierce is to work out a long-term deal.
However, from Pierce's perspective, in terms of maximizing his contract value, hitting free agency where numerous teams will be interested could further increase his payday.
With Dallas tagging George Pickens, Pierce is set to be the top available wide receiver on the free agent market, according to PFF.
PFF is projecting that Pierce's next deal is for four-years and worth $96 million. Spotrac projects will earn $80.99 million over four years on his free agent contract.
Along with leading the NFL in yards per catch the last two seasons, Pierce also eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in 2025 and saw his role expand in the Colts offense, with him asked to attack different levels of the field more often.
