Learning how to win can sometimes be the toughest lesson for inexperienced teams in any sport.
For the Ponaganset girls lacrosse team, it might have gotten that education on Wednesday night against Pilgrim.
Offense usually dominates the sport, but defense was the star of the show as the Chieftains and Patriots battled at the Bend Street Complex in Warwick. Goals were tough to come by and the game went back-and-forth all night until Lana Hess scored with 4:32 left to play and Kaelyn Souza came up with three clutch saves in the final four minutes to give Ponaganset a 6-5 win over Pilgrim in their Division III matchup.
Teams took turns scoring goals, with the Chieftains taking a 3-2 lead at halftime before the Patriots outscored them in the third quarter to head to the fourth knotted at four.
Possessions were drag-out affairs, as both defenses stuck to their principles and refused to budge. Ponaganset took a 5-4 lead 2:52 into the quarter on a goal by Jill Dixon, but with 5:51 left to play, Pilgrim’s Abby Killilea tied the game off a pass from Lily Farrell, who had three goals to that point of the night.
Souza and Pilgrim’s Zoey Anderson both came up with huge saves in the fourth, but Hess found a way to one-time a pass into a small space and get the go-ahead score with 4:32 left in the game.
The Patriots had their chances, but Souza turned away three shots – and had one go off the crossbar of the net – in a two-minute span. The Chieftains were able to possess the ball for nearly the final 2:30 to close out the victory, their second of the season.
Hess led the Chieftains (2-4 Division III) with three goals. Melanie Brown, Katie Damiano and Dixon had the remaining tallies.
Farrell led Pilgrim (2-3 Division III) with three goals. Taylor Mooney scored one and Killilea had the other score.
Trailing by a run after six innings, the Eagles rallied with two outs to take the lead and made it count.
A seventh-inning single by Lucas Tanous started it off. A walk to Rocco DaFonseca put two men on for Alex Anderson, who doubled home the tying run. Sam Montour followed with a single to take the lead, then Montour and Anderson execute a double-steal, with Anderson scoring Barrington's fifth run.
Reliever Tommy Coutant, who took over for his brother Nate after 5 2/3 innings, earned the win after ending a late threat with a strike out.
Tanous and Anderson each had a pair of hits and Montour and Santino Giuffrida each drove in two runs for Barrington in the win.
The Clippers' Micah Cousineau went 4-4 with a run scored and Gabriel Niman drove in two runs in the loss.
The Lions scored early and often in this Division I showdown, but the Sentinels were undeterred.
Smithfield plated six runs in the sixth inning to a take a one-run lead, and reliever Dom Lombardi made sure that would be enough.
Lincoln scored twice in the first when Caden Oldham drove home one run, and then scored on a single by Lucas Marshall. In the second, Joe Lezon doubled to plate two more runs as the Lions took s 4-0 lead. Two innings later, Lezon would come home on a sac fly by Tyler Almeida.
In the sixth, Smithfield struck back. Chase Prata's groundout brought home the first run, a Gavin Gibree single plated the second. A double by Wyatt Speakman brought in two more and then Speakman came home on a Brady McShane single to tie the score with two outs.
A Jacob Sylvester single to bring in Mason Dionne proved to be the game-winning hit.
On the mound, Brenan Robert took the loss for Lincoln after allowing five hits and four runs through 5.1 innings. Connor Curtis started the game for Smithfield and was relieved after three innings, eight hits and five runs allowed.
The Townies started strong and finished strong to handle the visiting Bulldogs.
The hosts put up a four-spot in the first inning thanks, in part, to an RBI triple by Kyle Desrosiers and a steal of home by Gavin Palombo. Palombo went 1-3 on the day with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored to pace the EP offense. Jamison Sydney was 2-3 with a run scored in the win.
For Westerly, Kevin Saglio was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a run scored.
Desrosiers earned the win for East Providence by striking out 10 over six innings and allowing seven hits and two runs. Jack Zerbarini took the loss for Westerly, striking out seven and allowing four hits and four runs over five innings.
The Quakers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and four in the second to seal the victory. Brayden Menard earned the win for Moses Brown. The starter allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out nine and walking five.
Tyler Doucet started on the mound for the Patriots and allowed two hits and seven unearned runs over two innings, striking out one and walking two.
DustinBoudreau went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Quakers and led the team with four RBI.
Ed McClung allowed just two hits and a lone run through seven innings and struck out nine in a complete-game victory for the Thunderbolts. McClung helped his own cause at the plate, as well, going 2-4 with a run scored.
MarcelloAcosta was 2-3 with an RBI double in the first to bring home McClung, who reached on a single. Camden Fermin and Tyler Chisholm also recorded RBIs in the win.
Jack Mather drove home the only Coventry run, and Spencer Knutton and Evan Nash were the only Oaker batters to record hits. Ryan Pina took the loss after tossing five innings, striking out four and allowing three runs.
Starter Jairo Martinez struck out 12 batters over seven innings to get the shutout for the Rams on their home field. He surrendered just two hits and walked one batter. AdryanUrena led the La Salle lineup with two runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-3 on the day.
Brayden Rosen took the loss for the Rebels. The right-handed pitcher went six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking one.
The Rogers offense came ready to play in this Newport County matchup with the Tigers. The Vikings scored three times in the first, and in every other inning except the second to win this one going away.
Division-III Tiverton did its best to keep pace with its Division-II foe and had trailed by just two runs after four innings, but Rogers never let up.
Isaiah Montevirgen was a force at the plate for the Vikings, going 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Leadoff batter Kieran Moore was 5-for-6 with one RBI and three runs scored and Colby Schreiber and Danny Hart each drove in a pair of runs. Orandy Bennett was a perfect 4-for-4 with five runs scored and an RBI.
The Tigers were paced by Sylas Carlile who was 2-for-4, with five batters driving in one run each.
On the mound, Rogers starter Chris Rosa struck out seven, and allowed seven hits and seven runs through five innings. Hart pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
The Avengers didn't waste much time in their clash with the Crusaders.
East Greenwich took a 7-0 lead after two innings and scored six more runs in this mercy-rule shortened affair.
Jimmy Gallagher and TylerNuti each drove in two runs for EG, and scored another. Caiden Souza was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Miles Dornan (1-2) and Walker Kilka (1-3) and Nolan Colucci (1-1) each scored two runs in the win.
For Prout, Cam Randall paced the offense going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Seth Edwards and Dylan Delgado each had one RBI.
Jaxon Ayotte earned the win after striking out six and allowing just two runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.
A 10-run third innings salted this one away for the visiting Vila Novans, as 16 Woonsocket batters came to the plate before the third out was recorded. When the dust settled, Woonsocket had amassed 11 RBIs on nine hits and eight base on balls.
Bryce Isher drove in three tuns, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and Jordan Plante drove in a pair and scored once. Julian DeJesus was 2-for-3 with a run scored, one RBI and one walk in the win.
For the Purple, who committed three errors in the loss, Eli Ozbek went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, and Oscar Charlesworth was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Novans' starter DeJesus earned the win by striking out eight and allowing five runs over six innings.
The Pride scored early and often against the Blue Wave.
Leadoff man Alex Torres had a game to remember, going 3-4 with three RBIs, four runs and an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, helping BVP to a 4-0 advantage after two innings.
BVP's Noah Ferreira was nearly untouchable on the mound, striking out eight batters and allowing just two hits in the shortened five-inning contest. At the plate, Ferreira was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI
Andriel DeJesus was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Cam Beaudreau went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI in the win.
For Hope, Josh Tejada and Chris Bernard recorded hits.
The Spartans banged out eight hits while starter Aiden Ouillette struck out five and allowed just two hits over three innings in this mercy-rule shortened game.
Scituate's Drake Dumont drove in four runs and four other Spartans enjoyed a multi-RBI game: Quinn Liptrot, Bishop Green, Tyler North and Ouillette each drove in two runs.
Paul Cuffee's hits came from Jayden Rodriguez and Alenix Del Rosario.
Down three goals heading to the fourth quarter, the Eagles rallied before Dylan Edwards tied the game in regulation and then went on to score the game-winner in the 6-5 overtime victory over the Patriots.
Edwards had three goals in the game for Barrington. Also figuring in the victory were Peyton Hillier, who had two goals and one assist, and Pat McNamara had one goal and one assist and goaltender Luca Rigamonti recorded seven saves.
Portsmouth, which plays in Division II, was led by Rafe Dionne, who scored three goals on the night, including the 50th goal of his career. Teddy Gersen and Luke Brandariz each had one goal in the loss.
Logan Fuller scored three goals and had a helper on another score, Brett Taylor also had a hat trick and Marcus Walsh netted two more goals in the Patriots win over the Crusaders.
For Prout in the loss, Adam Shone had a hat trick and two assists and goalie Steel Redfearn recorded a season-high 17 saves.
With the score tied at three at the half, the Avengers outscored the Rebels in the second half and came away with the 9-5 victory.
South Kingstown took an early 3-0 lead early in the first half only to have the Avengers respond with 3 goals of their own. East Greenwich then went on a 6-2 spurt in the third quarter to put things away.
Scoring for EG in the win were Wyatt Gelzhiser, who led all scorers with three goals. Cooper Lake added two and Austin Dufresne, Brady Parks, Markus Rowe and Micah Dawson scored one goal apiece.
For Division-I South Kingstown, Hampton Hubbard scored twice while Blake Riley, Michael Schafer and William Costello each added one in the loss.
Emerson Torrey scored four goals and Ben Browne and Brayden Vales scored two goals and recorded three assists each as the Huskies rolled over the Lions, 16-4.
Charlie Knapman came through with two goals and two assists for Mt. Hope. Nathan Carpenter and Aedan Nelson both had two goals and Aidan Pereira and Ian Pereira with 1 tally apiece.
Logan Synzal had two goals for Lincoln.
Riley Bouthillette led the way for the Lions with four goals. Andreya Imondi and Grace Araujo had three goals each for Lincoln. Molly Comtois added a goal to complete the scoring for Lincoln.
Classical was led by Madeline McGrane with five goals.

Milke Senepha and Bryan Leon were a 1-2 punch Pawtucket needed in its five-set win over its city rival.
Senepha and Leon were both in double-digit kills, with Senepha getting 13 to go with eight digs and Leon getting 10 to go with 15 diggs. Myles Carter had 42 assists in the win
Jaymeson Taylor led St. Raphael with 12 kills and seven blocks. Cameron McVeigh had eight kills and Davian Cabral had 33 assists in the loss.
The play of three Huskies paved the way for their dominating 25-19, 25-13, 25-8 sweep over the Falcons.
Matt Moran recorded nine blocks and five kills, Dylan DeOliveira had 18 assists and Arion Ferris posted six aces in the win.
For AF, Sebastian Fernandez led the way with six kills.
Malik Dantzier keyed a balanced offensive attack in the Patriots' 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 sweep of the Villa Novans.
Dantizer had six kills and two aces to lead Davies while Desean Jackson had three kills to go with two blocks. Moshood Lawal chipped in with two kills in the win.
Jaylin Rith led Woonsocket with eight kills and Max Vorasane had two kills in the loss.

Emerson Torrey scored four goals and Ben Browne and Brayden Vales scored two goals and recorded three assists each as the Huskies rolled over the Lions, 16-4.
Charlie Knapman came through with two goals and two assists for Mt. Hope. Nathan Carpenter and Aedan Nelson both had two goals and Aidan Pereira and Ian Pereira with 1 tally apiece.
Logan Synzal had two goals for Lincoln.

Riley Bouthillette led the way for the Lions with four goals. Andreya Imondi and Grace Araujo had three goals each for Lincoln. Molly Comtois added a goal to complete the scoring for Lincoln.
Classical was led by Madeline McGrane with five goals.

Milke Senepha and Bryan Leon were a 1-2 punch Pawtucket needed in its five-set win over its city rival.
Senepha and Leon were both in double-digit kills, with Senepha getting 13 to go with eight digs and Leon getting 10 to go with 15 diggs. Myles Carter had 42 assists in the win
Jaymeson Taylor led St. Raphael with 12 kills and seven blocks. Cameron McVeigh had eight kills and Davian Cabral had 33 assists in the loss.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL - Division III

The play of three Huskies paved the way for their dominating 25-19, 25-13, 25-8 sweep over the Falcons.
Matt Moran recorded nine blocks and five kills, Dylan DeOliveira had 18 assists and Arion Ferris posted six aces in the win.
For AF, Sebastian Fernandez led the way with six kills.
Davies 3, Woonsocket 0
Malik Dantzier keyed a balanced offensive attack in the Patriots' 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 sweep of the Villa Novans.
Dantizer had six kills and two aces to lead Davies while Desean Jackson had three kills to go with two blocks. Moshood Lawal chipped in with two kills in the win.
Jaylin Rith led Woonsocket with eight kills and Max Vorasane had two kills in the loss.
