Game of the Day

If the Moses Brown boys lacrosse team was trying to set a tone on Monday, it certainly didn't wait long to do it.

The Quakers scored before anyone could break a sweat and a dominant first quarter did all the damage needed in a 19-7 win over the visiting Rebels.

Griffin Carlson won the opening faceoff for Moses Brown, took it down the field and scored 10 seconds into the game. Carlson’s dominance in the face-off circle was a problem for South Kingstown, as he won the Quakers’ possession and they made the most of each opportunity.

Reece Chase scored the next two goals, making it 3-0 before the game was two minutes old. Chace’s hat trick with 9:03 left in the quarter had MB up five goals and by the midway point, the lead was seven. The Quakers added three more and the 10-0 lead allowed them to change their style for the remaining three quarters and focus on longer, smart possessions.

Chace led the Quakers with six goals and sophomore Hugo Harrell scored four times. John Cerce and Ben Magieira both had two goals in the win.

South Kingstown mustered up some offense in the second quarter and played close to even over the remainder of the game. Mason Thorne led the Rebels with three goals and Blake Riley scored two in the loss.

Hendricken 16, Coventry 0

The Hawks connected for three home runs, including a first inning grand slam to centerfield by Ryan Santo, and three pitchers combined to toss a five-inning no-hitter in this Division I clash.

Hendricken plated nine runs in the first and tacked on seven more in the fourth and fifth in this mercy-rule shortened affair. Cullen Crain (3 RBIs) and Dylan Poloski also went deep to add to the Hawks tally.

On the mound, Poloski and Jackson Spense split the first four innings, each striking out four without allowing any hits, and Jamir Liranzo finished it off with a pair of strikeouts in the fifth.

La Salle 16, Portsmouth 1

The Patriots had no answers for La Salle's Bronx Discullio. The Rams catcher was 3-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored in this five-inning contest.

Discullio was among four La Salle players with multiple RBIs: David Cavalloro, Axel DaSilva and Tom Welsh each recorded two RBIs in the win. DaSilva connected for a two-run homer in the second inning, and scored twice on the day.

Ryan Amaral got the start for La Salle and threw four innings, allowing one run while striking out seven and walking four.

For Portsmouth, Brady MacDonald was 1-2 with an RBI in the loss.

⚾BASEBALL - Division II

Narragansett 2, Ponaganset 1

Narragansett's Zayden Kent and Finley Hohl combined to pitch a four-hitter and both were key to the offense as they each scored a run in the 2-1 win over the Chieftains.

Kent started the game and allowed only one hit and one unearned and struck out eight over five innings. Hohl came on in relief in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Joseph Clark took the mound for Ponaganset and pitched five solid innings, allowing only one run with six walks and three strikeouts. Michael Wachter came on in relief in the sixth inning and gave up what proved to be the winning run.

West Warwick 11, North Providence 0

⚾BASEBALL - Division III

Woonsocket 11, North Smithfield 4

A nine-run second inning was more than enough for the Villa Novans to claim this home victory over the Northmen. Patrick Munger drove in a pair of runs and scored twice to pace Woonsocket.

Starting pitcher Julian DeJesus struck out eight over five innings, allowing a walk and four runs. At the plate, he went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Novans.

Division II

Central 7, Burrillville 6

SOFTBALL - Division I

St. Raphael 7, Pilgrim 6

Izzy Sousa drove in an insurance run that proved fruitful and the All-Stater held off a furious comeback to get the Saints a 7-6 win over the Patriots.

St. Raphael started the day beautifully, getting five runs over the first two innings highlighted by an RBI double by Sousa that brought home the game’s first run. Pilgrim got three in the fourth thanks in part to back-to-back triples from Kaelyn Shea and Kaleigh Zonfrillo and later cut the deficit to 5-4 heading to the sixth.

The Saints added to it in the bottom half, getting an RBI single from Noelle Welch and an RBI single from Sousa to make it 7-4, which looked like more than enough to grab the win.

It almost wasn’t. Madison Tuirok led off the top of the seventh with a double and Skylar Hawes followed with a two-run homer to left, cutting the deficit to one. Sousa retired the next batter, but back-to-back singles by Gretchen Dombeck and Natalie Fratus put the tying run on.

Sousa closed it out by inducing an infield fly, then ending the game on a popout to first base.

Welch finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs and Sousa was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Emma Martin went 2-for-3 with two runs in the win.

Hawes went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs for Pilgrim. Zonfrillo had two hits and one RBI in the loss.

La Salle 8, Smithfield 0

Sophia Morgan set the tone from the top of the order and Hailey Vigneau was her All-State self in the Rams’ 8-0 win over the Sentinels.

Morgan was an electric factor from the No. 1 spot in La Salle’s lineup, leading the game off with a double and scoring the first of two first-inning runs. In the second inning, she had an RBI single and later scored that put the Rams up 5-0 through two innings.

Vigneau didn’t need any more. The senior threw four innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight, to pick up the win. Freshman Teagan O’Reilly threw three innings of one-hit relief, striking out six, to pick up the save.

Morgan went 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI for La Salle. Abby Almeida had two hits out of the nine hole while scoring one run and driving in another. Nikki Pallotta also had two hits and drove in one run.

Westerly 11, South Kingstown 0

Frankie Arnold dazzled in her debut and Alison Maranda and the Bulldogs gave her more than enough support in the 11-0 win over the Rebels.

Injuries plagued Arnold during her freshman campaign at Bay View and weather delayed her official debut for her hometown team. The wait proved to be worth it as Arnold threw four no-hit innings, striking out nine and walking one before Raegan Doyle finished off the fifth inning.

Westerly pounced early on Division II South Kingstown, getting its first run on a successful double steal and added another on an RBI single by Maranda. Madison Maguire followed with a two-run single that made it 4-0 after the first inning.

The Bulldogs added three more in the second and four in the fourth, bringing the 10-run rule into play. Maranda finished her afternoon 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run and Arnold helped her own cause, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Addison Poole scored three runs and Ella Keegan scored twice. Maguire drove in two in the win.

SOFTBALL - Division I

Portsmouth 8, Scituate 1

Barbara Rainey’s bat did plenty of talking all afternoon as she powered the Patriots to an 8-1 win over the Spartans.

Portsmouth was down 1-0 before it had a chance to swing, but it didn’t take long to flip the scoreboard. A Scituate error tied the game at one before Rainey’s double gave the Patriots the lead for good.

It was 4-1 in the fourth when Rainey struck again with another RBI double, later scoring on a successful double steal attempt. Rainey then slammed the door shut on any comeback with a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Rainey closed her afternoon going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs. Emily Bronson went 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI and Kaylyn Aubuchon also had three hits.

Mia Ruggieri threw 6 2/3 innings of two-hit ball, giving up one unearned run and while striking out 10.

Scituate’s lone run was scored after Katelyn Chatelle led the game of with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

Barrington 26, Davies 10

In a shocking three-run hole after the first inning, the Eagles offense put on a show and scored 23 runs over the next to innings to make short work of the Patriots in a 26-10 win.

Division II Barrington opened the afternoon with three runs in the top of the first, but Davies – which plays in Division III – came right back and scored six.

The Eagles still trailed 6-5 with two outs in the top half of the second when the offense found a rhythm. Isabella Gomez hit a two-run single that gave Barrington the lead for good and a Cora Floriani two-run double highlighted the 10-run inning. Up 14-6 in the third, the Eagles scored nine runs before recording an out and had little issue closing the game out via the 15-run rule.

Gomez finished her day 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs. Grace Fontaine went 1-for-3 with three RBI and three runs and Maya Etheridge was 1-for-2 with three RBI and three runs.

Zoe Kelsey was 1-for-1 with four runs and two RBI and Aubrey Paxton went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Lucy Cabral finished her day 1-for-2 with two runs and three RBI.

Jelissa Febus powered the Davies’ offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Kylie Robert and Aalyshah Guzman both scored two runs in the loss.

Lincoln 11, Kent County 4

The Lions roared in the second inning, as Lucia Whyte helped set a tone for how the day was going to go in an 11-4 win over Kent County.

Brielle Lambert hit an RBI double that plated Chloe Landry in the second and Lincoln took advantage of Kent County miscues to the tune of three more runs. Whyte hit an RBI double that made it 5-0.

Kent County – a co-op of West Warwick and Toll Gate – scored another run in the second, but Lincoln didn’t stop putting runs on the board. The Lions’ lead shrunk to 8-4 after Kent County scored three in the fourth, but they added a run in the fifth before an RBI single by Landry and an RBI double by Adeline Macomber closed out the scoring.

Whyte was the offensive star, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Mykiah Oldham went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run and Macomber was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Landry finished with three runs in the win.

Lincoln freshman Mary Ganim threw all seven innings, giving up one earned run with seven strikeouts.

Sophia Moreira led Kent County’s offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs. Sarah Payan had two RBI in the loss.

SOFTBALL - Division III

Juanita Sanchez 23, Mount Pleasant 4

The Cavaliers posted a 10-spot in the first inning and never looked back, cruising to a 23-4 win over the Kilties.

Juanita Sanchez came out swinging, as an RBI double by freshman Veasna Yean got the scoring started. The Cavaliers put up four runs before the first out was recorded, got an RBI single by Karla Cruz and, after, a bases-loaded walk, Yean hit another RBI single to make it 9-0, with another bases-loaded walk capping scoring for the inning.

Mount Pleasant came back with one run in the top of the second, but Juanita Sanchez scored five in the bottom half. The Kilties got three in the third, but Juanita Sanchez scored eight in the bottom before closing the game out via the 15-run rule.

Yean finished the game 2-for-2 with six runs and four RBI. Evanesence Franco went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs. Keasia Mulbah scored four runs and Maryethel Moore and Cruz both scored three times in the win.
