The Georgia baseball SEC Tournament game against Mississippi State has been pushed up three hours on Thursday May 21 due to the threat of inclement weather in the Hoover, Ala., area.
The teams will now play at 1 p.m. ET at the Hoover Met in a quarterfinal game.
Georgia is widely projected as a No. 3 national NCAA Tournament seed entering its first game in the SEC tournament.
Coach Wes Johnson doesn’t think anything the Bulldogs do this week should affect its seeding when the 64-team NCAA Tournament field is revealed on Monday May 25.
The top-seeded and SEC regular season champion Bulldogs (43-12) earned a double bye after going 23-7 in the SEC.
“Our body of work, I mean we won 11 out of our last 12 so they can’t say we weren’t playing good down the stretch,” Johnson said. “They can’t say we weren’t playing good on the road. They can’t say we didn’t play good at home. We didn’t have a losing week all year. Yeah, I don’t think it has much bearing. I don’t think you’re going to jump a Georgia Tech or a UCLA. I don’t think there’s a lot of bearing on results this weekend.”
Georgia hasn’t won an SEC Tournament game since 2021.
“I think the competitor in us, yeah, obviously want to go win the tournament, you want to go win every single game, we want to win it by a lot,” third baseman Tre Phelps said.
No. 8 seed Mississippi State routed Missouri, 12-2, on Wednesday, but Georgia swept Mississippi State in Starkville April 2-4.
The winner moves on to the semifinals on Saturday against either Florida or Alabama in the single elimination tournament.
“We just want to go play good baseball,” Johnson said. “If that produces a win on Thursday then obviously that’s your goal is you want to win. I think it starts with playing good baseball. It starts with coming out focused. As I’ve said about this team, they love to compete at everything.”
Georgia has never won an SEC Tournament championship.
“We’ve accomplished a lot this year,” infielder Ryan Wynn said. “It’s just another thing we want to check off and it lines up perfectly with how we want go throughout the postseason.”
