Georgia baseball earned a double-bye in the SEC Tournament which will allow coach Wes Johnson to turn to Joey Volchko as the starter Thursday against No. 8 seed Mississippi State in a game that was pushed up to a 1 p.m. ET first pitch.

Volhcko, the regular Friday starter on SEC weekends who is 8-2 with a 4.22 ERA, started the first game at Auburn last week.

Matt Scott, who like Volchko transferred from Stanford, will also be ready to throw for the top-seeded and 43-12 Bulldogs, Johnson said.

“We’re staying with it,” Johnson said. “We’ve got guys on bullpen schedules as if we’re playing a regular (series). I know there’s an off day Friday if you win Thursday, but as if we’re playing a Thursday, Friday, Saturday series is the way we’re setting our routines up.”

Georgia started JT Quinn in a 3-2 loss to Oklahoma in the SEC Tournament last season when the Bulldogs used five pitchers in a Wednesday game.

Johnson started Jarvis Evans in a 9-1 loss to LSU in a Tuesday game in 2024. He lasted just a 1/3 of an inning.

“For the first time since I’ve been here, our pitching staff is in position to not be stressed in Hoover,” Johnson said. “Last year, especially my first year, we were stressed at the end of the year. We needed some time. You’re going into Hoover at that point the first two years where it’s like, man, I don’t need to throw a Kolten Smith my first year or a Leighton Finley. We’d been leaning on them so much.”

Johnson wanted those pitchers to be fresh for the NCAA Regional the following Friday.

“Winning the regular season and not playing until Thursday, you can get your guys back and get them recovered,” Johnson said. “There’s just so many things you’re able to do.”
