Georgia baseball begins what it hopes is a postseason path that leads it to Omaha and the College World Series when it plays Long Island on Friday in a game moved up two hours due to the threat of inclement weather.
The matchup in the No. 3 national seed Bulldogs first game in the NCAA Athens Regional is at Foley Field where the Bulldogs will play at home for third straight year.
“It’s still baseball,” coach Wes Johnson said Thursday. “There’s some cool banners hanging up now. …We’re not going to make a bigger deal. When you add emotion to games, when you add a heightened awareness, players come in a little more tense, tend to panic a little more if things don’t go their way immediately out of the chute.”
Georgia is the top seed in a regional that also includes No. 2 Boston College and No. 3 Liberty, teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation in steals.
Those two teams will go up against each other at 12:06 p.m. Friday in the double-elimination regional.
“I’m happy where we’re at,” Boston College catcher Gunnar Johnson said after practicing Thursday in Athens. “It’s awesome being a 2 seed. I think with our style and the way we play, we’re a good matchup for these teams in this regional. I’m pretty confident what we can do.”
Georgia did not make it out of its regional last season after losing to Duke and Oklahoma State.
“This year I think it’s a different feeling between everyone in the clubhouse where it’s like, give us whoever, we’re going to go dominate,” catcher Daniel Jackson said.
Long Island (30-20) is tied for 14th in the nation with 139 steals led by second baseman Elijah Fairchild’s 30 in 32 attempts.
“Our league is designed around power,” Johnson said. “You got home runs, you got big velocity. You don’t see a ton of running like they do or for that matter Boston College. That will be the difference that we’ve had to work on a little more that we work on stuff during the week once we got the draw.”
Georgia will play Long Island on ESPN+. Announcers for the game are Dave Neal and Gordon Beckham.
Georgia and Long Island will play at Foley Field at 5:06 p.m. Friday.
