There's stiff competition for the best local high school mascot.
The Fort Collins area is full of interesting and distinctive team nicknames that give schools a defined identity.
But there's one that stood out above the rest in the Coloradoan's fan polling.
The Poudre High School Impalas took top local honors in our Blue Federal Credit Union best mascots voting.
The Impalas mascot is unique among school characters, with Poudre being the only U.S. school to utilize the mascot.
According to the school's 50-year anniversary retrospective, the antelope mascot was chosen by the original crop of students after the school opened in 1964, and they took inspiration from seeing the animal in a National Geographic magazine.
In 1966, Dr. Robert Parke donated a taxidermized impala to PHS after a safari in Africa. The Impala has long been encased in a display near the school's entrance, with text reading:
"In our showcase, displaying itself proud and beautiful, is the symbol of our school, 'The Impala.' Its slim erect head watches our progress with soft yet determined eyes. He leads us into competition with a power and spirit unequaled by any other mascot’s. He leads us home in victory proudly. Because the Impala is proud, determined, and the possessor of unquenchable spirit, so are we, the bearers of the name Impala." — Dauna Baltz, 1968
The Poudre Impala mascot is affectionately known as "Cache," in a nod to the local Cache La Poudre River.
Poudre fans showed out at the polls, ultimately lifting the Impalas to the win with 53% of the vote.
That bested the other 10 nominees and mascots from Fort Collins-area high schools:

- Poudre Community Academy: the Warriors
- Windsor Charter Academy: the Firebirds
- Liberty Common: the Eagles (red, white and blue)
