AKRON – In a battle of high school baseball programs rich in tradition, Hamilton Badin turned back Watterson 7-2 in the Division III state final June 12 at 7 17 Credit Union Park.

Playing in its 17th state tournament, Badin earned its third title and first since 1996. The Rams also won it all in 1991.

Competing in its eighth state tournament and first since 2015, Watterson fell short of its fourth championship and first since 1997. The Eagles also won titles in 1988 and 1991.

Like they did in their 5-1 state semifinal win June 11 over Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, the Eagles (27-4) struck quickly as Michael Wozniak doubled and Michael Mulligan tripled for a 1-0 lead in the first.

Watterson, however, struggled in scoring situations the rest of the way and stranded nine runners.

Badin (30-3) took the lead for good with a three-run bottom of the first. Chandler Taylor hit an RBI double, and Austin Vangen and Vince Laugle had RBI singles.

The Eagles closed to within 3-2 in the fifth when Caden Mangini singled and scored on an errant return throw to the infield following Ben Uhlenhake’s single.

Badin added three runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Colt Emerson’s RBI double against reliever Connor Adkins-Davidson.

The Rams closed the scoring in the sixth on Keegan Sawyer’s sacrifice fly.

Watterson had several scoring threats, but Badin turned double plays in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Three Badin pitchers combined to limit Watterson to six hits, with starter Brooks Treadway earning the win. He allowed one earned run on six hits with two walks in 4⅓ innings.

Watterson starter Max Steinbrunner took the loss, allowing three runs and four hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 3⅓ innings.

Mulligan had two hits to lead the Eagles.

Emerson had two of the Rams’ eight hits and scored twice, and Vangen had two RBIs.
