Washington vs. Indiana in the Big Ten Softball Tournament
The No. 5 seed Washington Huskies earned their first-ever win in the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday after pulling off a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and now they'll have a chance to exact some revenge on the No. 4 seed Indiana Hoosiers.
Last year, coach Shonda Stanton's team ousted the Huskies from the tournament on the first day with a 2-0 win, and now the more experienced Huskies are coming in with a little bit of momentum after dropping eight of their final nine games to close out the regular season. However, they'll face a Hoosiers team that ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten with 439 runs scored.
Washington will most likely counter that offense in the circle with Morgan Reimer, who put together a dominant outing in a complete game performance against the Golden Gophers, letting up 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and 3 walks with a hit batter and 6 strikeouts to snap a streak of five straight losses.
At the plate, the Huskies flexed the depth of their lineup on Wednesday, with left fielder Ava Carroll playing hero with a run-scoring double off the wall in left in the fifth inning to give UW the lead for good. Now, coach Heather Tarr is hoping that at the top of the order, Alexis DeBoer can catch fire after the Preseason Second Team All-American honoree put together a team-leading 18 home runs, 45 runs scored, 35 walks, and 1.245 OPS, while her .363 batting average and 58 hits also rank inside the squad's top five.
The winner of Thursday's contest will take on the victor of Nebraska vs. Michigan on Friday.
