The Washington Huskies hit the recruiting trail heavily on Monday by extending a trio of scholarship offers to 2028 recruits.
Among the Evergreen State products offered by coach Danny Sprinkle to start the week was West Valley-Yakima combo guard Austin Birley, a 6-foot-5 sophomore with only one other scholarship offer on the table on the first day schools can contact prospective recruits in the 2028 class.
Birley shared a post on Instagram to announce his offers from both UW and Saint Louis University on Monday, adding a pair of schools to Colorado State and Seattle University, the first two offers for the eastern Washington native. As a sophomore, the versatile guard averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists per game while earning Big 9 Defensive Player of the Year honors for West Valley-Yakima.
Birley held his own against incoming UW freshman forward Lattimore Ford, a standout wing at Mount Si High School, in an 80-71 defeat for WVHS on February 28 that saw Ford finish with a game-high 28 points.
Since Sprinkle's arrival in Seattle in March 2024, the program has signed five high school recruits, none of whom are still with the program as he enters his third season as the Huskies' coach, with Ford being the lone prep addition in 2026.
To offer Birley at this point shows that the former Montana State and Utah State coach believes it's still worth the investment long-term to recruit high school prospects in order to have enough carryover year-to-year on the roster, while also establishing a significant portion of each roster through a mix of international signings and traditional transfers.
