Several male athletes ran outstanding races and made impressive jumps and throws during the state track and field meet.

The state tournament field was set in all three classes for boys golf during the week as well. It was also another busy week of boys soccer and tennis featuring athletes from the Ames area.

Opening day for high school baseball also took place during the week.

Johnson turned in a surprise third-place performance in the Class 4A boys shot put at the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships on May 22 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Johnson's strength had been the discus all season, but he did not qualify for state in the event. Instead, he qualified 11th in the shot put.

But Johnson raised the bar at state. He peaked with a PR toss of 57 feet, 8.25 inches. That toss was 4-2 farther than his qualifying throw, and it was good enough to win him a bronze medal at state.

Logan Bleich, Gilbert

Bleich placed in the top four during three individual events and he also anchored the Gilbert boys track and field team to a runner-up time in the 3A boys 4x800-meter relay at the Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships held May 21-23 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Bleich took third in both the 3A boys 3,200 on May 21 and 1,600 on May 23 with respective times of 9:10.98 and 4:14.05. He placed fourth in the 800 on May 23 with a time of 1:53.09.

On May 21, Bleich helped Gilbert briefly set a 3A record in the boys 4x800 before it was broken by Pella in the second section. The Tigers won a silver medal with a time of 7:47.21.

Stetson Kane, Ballard

Kane anchored Ballard to a bronze medal in the 3A boys shuttle hurdle relay on May 23 at the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships in Des Moines.

The Bombers finished the race in a season-best time of 58.48. Kane also placed 11th in the 3A boys 110 high hurdle prelims on May 22 with a time of 15.05.

Parker Rodgers, Nevada

Rodgers is headed back to the Class 3A boys state golf tournament for the third year in a row.

The Nevada junior will get the chance to defend his 3A state title after shooting an even-par 74 over 18 holes at the 3A district meet at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club on May 18 in Atlantic. Rodgers took third individually at the meet.

Tristen Crabbs, Roland-Story

Crabbs placed in two events, and he nearly added a third during the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships held May 21-23 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Crabbs took seventh in the 2A boys open 200 with a time of 22.11 and he just missed the top eight in the 100 with a ninth-place time of 11.18 in the prelims. Crabbs anchored Roland-Story to a fifth-place finish in the 2A boys 4x100 relay on May 23 with a time of 43.37.
