The week of May 3-9 was another eventful one for male high school athletes from the Ames area.
It was a busy week of conference track and field meets featuring Ames-area schools. Ames competed at the Iowa Alliance Conference meet, Ballard and Gilbert at the Raccoon River Conference meet, Collins-Maxwell and Colo-NESCO at the Iowa Star Conference meet and Nevada and Roland-Story at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet.
There were also several exciting boys golf meets, tennis matches and soccer games involving teams from the Ames area.
Here are the Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of May 3-9. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Varsa helped the Nevada boys tennis team roll to its third consecutive North Central Conference title on May 5 at Webster City.
Varsa placed first in the No. 1 singles competition. He defeated Webster City's Nathan Wardell and Iowa Falls-Alden's Carter Zollar in straight sets, scoring a pair of 6-0 shutouts in each match.
Angell brought home the 110-meter high hurdles and 400 hurdles titles for the Colo-NESCO boys track and field team at the Iowa Alliance Conference track and field meet on May 7 in Tama.
Angell won the 110 highs in 15.46 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 57.29 seconds.
Vander Wilt helped Ames claim the Iowa Alliance Conference boys track and field team championship by anchoring the Little Cyclones to victory in two relays at the boys conference meet on May 5 in Fort Dodge.
Vander Wilt anchored Ames to victory in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:30.81 and he also ran the final leg on the Little Cyclones' winning sprint medley team that finished in a season-best time of 1:34.89. Vander Wilt added a runner-up individual performance in the open 200 with a 22.24 showing.
Colvin shared the top score with teammate Parker Domino in helping the Ballard boys golf team place first at the Gilbert Invitational on May 9 at the Ames Golf and Country Club in Ames.
Colvin and Domino both shot an even-par 18-hole round of 71 during the tournament. Colvin also placed second to Washington's Rajan Roth during the Washington Invitational boys golf meet on May 4 at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside.
Colvin shot a one under 71 over 18 holes at the Washington Invite to trail Roth by two strokes.
Bleich helped Gilbert cruise to the Raccoon River Conference boys track and field team title during the conference meet on May 6 at Adel.
Bleich won three individual events for Gilbert. He took first in the open 800 with a 1:57.84 showing, the 1,600 with a 4:24.72 effort and a the 3,200 with a time of 9:52.67.

Connery Varsa, Nevada

Varsa helped the Nevada boys tennis team roll to its third consecutive North Central Conference title on May 5 at Webster City.
