The week of May 17-23 saw the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships take place at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

There were several exceptional performances by female athletes from the Ames area during the state track and field meet. Athletes from the Ames area excelled in running, jumping and throwing events during state.

The girls state golf field was set and two teams from the Ames area advanced. Female athletes from the area also stood out in soccer and golf.


Here are the Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of May 17-23. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Sophia Hatcher, Ames​

Hatcher concluded her phenomenal high school girls track career by winning one silver and one bronze medal for the Ames girls track and field program at the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships held May 21-23 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Hatcher broke her own school record in the girls long jump at 18 feet, 11.25 inches to place second in Class 4A on May 22. She ran a PR time of 14.17 in the 4A girls 100 hurdles to finish third on May 23.

Hatcher also anchored Ames to a fifth-place finish in the 4A girls shuttle hurdle relay (1:03.22) and she helped the Little Cyclones take eighth in the 4A girls 4x400 (3:57.31).

Taylor Rechkemmer, Roland-Story​


Rechkemmer ran the decisive leg on Roland-Story's 2A state champion girls shuttle hurdle relay on May 23 at the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships in Des Moines.

Rechkemmer put Roland-Story ahead to stay after running an outstanding third leg. The Norse won in 1:05.88.

Rechkemmer also took 22nd in the 3A girls 100 hurdles prelims (16.91).

Jessie Lohman, Ames​


Lohman qualified individually for the Class 4A girls state golf meet after an impressive performance at the 4A Region 1 meet held on May 20 at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

Lohman carded a 12-over round of 85 over 18 holes. She placed third overall.

Aubrey Johnson, Gilbert​


Johnson turned in a fantastic freshman performance at the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships held May 21-23 in Des Moines.

Johnson placed second in the 3A girls long jump on May 22 with an outstanding jump of 18-1.25. She also placed fourth in the 3A girls 100 hurdles on May 23 with a 14.86 showing and anchored Gilbert to a ninth-place showing in the 4x100 prelims on May 22 with a time of 48.99.

Elizabeth Erickson, Colo-NESCO​


Erickson placed in all three of her events for the Colo-NESCO girls track and field team at the 2026 Iowa high school girls and boys state track and field championships held May 21-23 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Erickson took fourth in the 1A girls 1,500 and sixth in the 800 on May 23 with times of 4:49.60 and 2:16.66. She placed sixth in the 3,000 on May 21 with a 10:15.20 showing.
