SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The defending Class 3A baseball state champions continue their chase for back-to-back titles.
The Wall Hawks have plowed their way through the first two playoff rounds, sweeping Blanco and Tolar to reach the regional semifinals. Through early adversity, experience and togetherness, the Hawks find themselves in prime position for a repeat state championship. But first, the team looks to take care of business this week versus a former district rival, Coahoma.
“[Wall has] rallied together,” Hawks head coach Jeremy Gordon said. “Through the good times and bad times, [the players have] just been able to power through and stay together. That’s important and so you see all that paying off right now.”
Wall is no stranger to this spotlight.
“It’s all about peaking at the right time as a squad,” Hawks senior Stephen Laney said. “I feel like [Wall is] going to start that this week with Coahoma. I feel like [Wall’s] bats are going to start getting hot, and then [Wall’s] defense keeps on playing good and [Wall’s] pitchers are shoving as always.”
Wall’s senior class has embraced this journey all along, and its experience is showing.
“We’re all seniors, we’ve all got it together and we’ve been in this position before,” Hawks senior Kellan Oliver said. “Since we all have dealt with adversity in the beginning of the season, I think it’s pushed [Wall’s] limits so far, and that’s why [the team is] playing such good ball right now.”
Wall’s best-of-three series versus Coahoma begins Friday, May 15 at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Game one begins at 7 p.m. Central Standard Time.
