North Carolina will take on West Virginia in the winners’ bracket of the College World Series on Sunday at 2 p.m.

It will be the first meeting between the programs since the 2024 Chapel Hill Super Regional, which North Carolina swept to advance to the College World Series.

North Carolina (51-12-1) opened the College World Series with a 6-2 win over Ole Miss, powered by dominant pitching and a late offensive surge. Starter Jason DeCaro delivered another clutch performance, striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings while allowing five hits and two earned runs, matching his career high in strikeouts.

Offensively, the Tar Heels capitalized on limited chances with runners on base, going 2-for-5 in those situations after struggling in the super regional against USC. Gavin Gallaher provided a go-ahead RBI single, and Jake Schaffner added a game-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh. The decisive blow came in the eighth, when catcher Colin Hynek crushed a first-pitch changeup for a three-run home run, giving UNC crucial insurance and sealing the victory.

Meanwhile, West Virginia (46-15) defeated Cinderella Troy to win its first College World Series game in its first appearance in Omaha.

The Mountaineers will start Maxx Yehl, the Big 12 pitcher of the year, who has 105 strikeouts this season. North Carolina will counter with Ryan Lynch, who will try to keep West Virginia catcher Gavin Kelly from getting hot; Kelly is batting .377 with 21 doubles, three triples and 17 home runs.
