One of North Carolina's top transfer portal acquisitions is officially set to join new Tar Heels' head coach Michael Malone in 2026-27.

On Tuesday, former NC State shooting guard and UNC transfer portal commit Matt Able opted to withdraw from the 2026 NBA draft and head to Chapel Hill for his sophomore season. A 6-foot-6 Baltimore native, Able appeared in 34 games for the Wolfpack as a true freshman this past season. He averaged 21.7 minutes per game with 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals.

"Over the weekend I spent time with my family, my representation and those closest to me. I’ve decided to withdraw my name from the 2026 NBA Draft and continue my development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,” Able said in a statement per Marc J. Spears of Andscape. “Grateful for the feedback I received throughout this process and excited to be part of the Tar Heel family.”

Able had a solid showing at the NBA draft combine, averaging 16 points across two scrimmages, but he instead chose to return to college ahead of Wednesday night's deadline to withdraw. He becomes the first player to transfer from NC State to North Carolina since the World War II era.
