NC State freshman Matt Able will reportedly withdraw from the 2026 NBA draft and transfer to North Carolina, according to Marc J. Spears of Andscape.
Able averaged 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting 35.5% from 3-point range in 34 games this past season with the Wolfpack. He scored in double figures 14 times, including a season-high 19 points and six rebounds on Feb. 17 in a win over the Tar Heels.
A consensus top-30 recruit, Able was the highest-ranked freshman to sign with NC State since Dennis Smith Jr. (2016-17). He was the first player to commit to coach Will Wade, who resigned after one season following their loss to Texas in the First Four.
Able announced on April 6 that he would enter the transfer portal while also declaring for the draft, maintaining his college eligibility. He eventually committed to play for coach Michael Malone if he withdrew from the draft ahead of the early entry deadline on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old was among the top performers at the draft combine earlier this month, averaging 16 points and 3.5 rebounds in two scrimmage games. He also went 14-for-25 in the 3-point star and 19-for-30 in the off-the-dribble shooting drills.
Able was considered an early second-round pick following his combine showing, which likely factored into his decision to forgo the draft for now. He now projects to be a significant addition for Malone in his first season as a college head coach.
