North Carolina is the No. 2 team in the country, according to both D1Baseball and USA TODAY Sports, largely because of its pitching staff.
The Diamond Heels lead the ACC and rank ninth nationally in ERA (3.71) and have one of the deepest staffs in the country. The Tar Heels aren’t strikeout merchants, but they get outs by any means necessary; they rank 13th nationally in double plays.
Here are their top three performers from the regular season.
DeCaro has lived up to the hype as North Carolina’s ace, emerging as one of the most dominant pitchers in the country, let alone the ACC.
DeCaro is 10-2 in 14 starts with a 2.03 ERA, which ranks second in the ACC. He has allowed 22 runs (16 earned) on 59 hits in 71 innings, with 32 walks and 69 strikeouts.
He has thrown four shutouts and has five outings without an earned run. He recorded a season-high nine strikeouts against Notre Dame on March 28 and is a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist.
Glauber has had an impressive freshman season, earning ACC Freshman of the Year honors, and has becoming a key piece of North Carolina’s bullpen. He is 8-0 over 22 appearances, including two starts, and leads the ACC with a 1.94 ERA. In 64 1/3 innings, he has given up 17 runs (14 earned) on 40 hits, with 33 walks and a team-high 74 strikeouts.
He is second on the team with four saves and is a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist. Glauber did not allow a run in 13 of his 22 outings and had a season-high eight strikeouts against Louisville on March 22.
McDuffie has built on his freshman season and has become the ACC’s best closer, with five saves, the most in the conference. In 29 appearances, he has a 2.86 ERA, allowing 18 runs (all earned) on 37 hits in 56.2 innings, with 33 walks and 73 strikeouts.
