UFC legend Dustin Poirier made headlines for the wrong reasons this weekend as he was arrested for public drunkenness in an airport in Georgia after being kicked off a flight.

The video of Poirier's arrest went viral on social media, and it was equal parts sad and frightening as the former Lightweight fighter was clearly extremely intoxicated and menacing.

Dustin Poirier admits he needs help after drunken arrest video goes viral

While it's unfortunate that a low moment for Poirier became entertainment for millions of people on the internet, perhaps the embarrassment and shame that comes with it will serve as a wake-up call for Poirier, who admittedly struggles with alcohol.

Shortly after the video went viral, Poirier took to social media to admit that he needs help, which he vowed to get.

"I'm at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn't been easy on me and alcohol isn't the answer," Poirier wrote. "It has ruined my father's life and I will not allow it to ruin mine, my family deserve me at 100%. I'm trying to do everything I can to get my mind right and take the right next steps."

Admitting that you need help is the first, and most important, step, so hopefully Poirier is able to get the help that he needs.

Poirier retired from the UFC last year, and he has been honest and upfront about how difficult stepping away from fighting has been for him after nearly two decades in the game.

“Retiring is scary man,” Poirier said during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast earlier this year. “Days are long. I have a lot of time. I don’t have to get ready for a fight. … I wouldn’t say depressed, but I got into a kind of funk like, ‘What the hell am I going to do with my life?’

"Like, it feels crazy. It’s like I’m re-learning who I am. I don’t know who I am without fighting. … Fighting was a cloud in my mind that never went away for 20 years. Now I wake up and it’s gone. What do I do? I’m still trying to find out.”

This is a battle that many fighters face and unfortunately Poirier lost the latest round. But, just like in the octagon, he'll have an opportunity to pick himself up and fight another day. He still has many fans in his corner.
