Happy Monday! As the new week begins, it’s time to get caught up with what happened late last week in UConn athletics.
Highlights include a contract signing, strong finishes in major events and a schedule release for fall.
Let’s start with the contract.
Left-handed pitcher Charlie West signed his first pro contract, starting his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2026 MLB Draft earlier this month.
The Dodgers’ draft tracker shows that West, who was selected with the No. 223 pick, will receive a signing bonus of $197,500, which is below the $260,300 valued assigned to that draft spot.
It was not disclosed whether West will spend the rest of the minor league season at the Dodgers’ instructional camp in Arizona or be assigned to an affiliate. The Dodgers’ Class A team is the Ontario Tower Buzzers, based in Southern California, and the High-A Great Lakes Loons are located in Michigan.
At UConn, West led the Big East in the 2026 season with 111 strikeouts and earned first-team All-Big East recognition. He turned in eight quality starts among his 16 starts and finished the campaign with a 6-6 record and 4.12 ERA spread over 87 1/3 innings.
In three seasons with the Huskies, West appeared in 37 games (23 starts) and had a 12-6 overall record when including a 6-0 sophomore season. He had a 3.77 ERA and compiled 176 strikeouts and 76 walks in 143 1/3 innings. Batters hit .222 against him.
UConn decathlete Josh Mooney finished sixth overall at the 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium in New York.
He totaled 7,495 points, with his strongest performances in the 10 events coming in the pole vault (third place, 5.00 meters), 110-meter hurdles (fifth, 14.45 seconds) and javelin (fifth, 56.84 meters).
As a junior last season, Mooney gained an All-America first-team selection following his eighth-place finish in the decathlon at 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in May at Eugene, Ore.
That was his second consecutive All-America honor. In 2025, he was 12th in the nationals.
Distance runner Malin Rahm, a native of Switzerland, won a bronze medal at the 2026 Swiss Athletics Championships in Zurich.
She earned her third-place finish in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 16:47.93.
Rahm now is a senior at UConn, where she is on both the track and cross country teams and also competes in the steeplechase.
The UConn women's cross country team finished sixth in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships and fourth in the Big East championships in 2025 and will look to improve on those in 2026. They will be led by captain Chloe Trudel and Sascha Letica, both of whom finished the season with personal-best times in the NCAA regional.
The Huskies’ schedule was released over the weekend. Anyone interested in cheering for the UConn women in a local meet have just one opportunity – opening weekend at the University of Hartford.
