Entering play on Monday, the Boston Red Sox had a 13-game winning streak that they were looking to extend in the opening of a three-game set against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.
And new University of Connecticut head football coach Jason Candle was there in person to see it, as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game.
Ironically, the last UConn football game of the 2025 season was played at Fenway, as the Huskies lost the Fenway Bowl to Army. It was the second consecutive season that Jim Mora took the Huskies to the Fenway Bowl. Mora left after the season to become the head coach at Colorado State.
Candle spent 10 years at Toledo before coming to Storrs.
While there's a clear UConn and New England connection that can resonate in Boston, it is interesting to see Candle throw out the first pitch considering UConn football is rivals with both UMass and Boston College. Both teams are on the Huskies schedule often, and the Huskies will play UMass again this season.
The Huskies are just six weeks away from the start of the 2026 season, as they open up the Candle-era on Sept. 5 at home against Lafayette. The team will meet with the media on Thursday as part of a university-sanctioned media day, and there will be several questions for Candle to answer, including who has the leg up in the team's quarterback battle.
Previous starting quarterback Joe Fagnano is now with the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL, and there's a new group of QB's in from the recruiting trail looking to make an impact, including SEC transfer Jacob Merklinger. He previously played at Tennessee.

According to a new report from On3's Dushawn London, the UConn men's basketball team has made an official offer to AJ Williams, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2028.
The 6-foot-8 forward from Eagle Landing's Christian Academy in Georgia also has offers from the likes of Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Auburn, and Florida State. As the rising junior progresses through high school, he's sure to get more offers from even more high-profile schools, creating more competition for Dan Hurley and his staff.
The Huskies are coming off a season in which they advanced to the national title game for the third time in four years. They lost to Michigan after winning the previous two.
