No. 1 UCLA baseball handled the Iowa Hawkeyes for nearly nine innings to win the first game of their series versus Iowa 5-2 at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City on Friday.
The Bruins played similarly to their low-scoring game against LMU earlier in the week with the pitching staff and defense clipping the Hawkeyes wings. Junior right-handed pitcher Logan Reddemann stood on the mound for a little over six innings and gave Iowa's batters fits by allowing five hits, a walk and a run, but racked up nine strikeouts for a 2.72 earned run average.
UCLA's batters crossed home twice in the first, but weren't able to add onto their lead. Partially because within the first two innings, the Bruins struck out five times. The Bruins pitching was just as fierce with Reddemann standing his ground and forcing four Iowa batters to strikeout swinging within the first two innings.
In the top of the third, UCLA started with two outs, but a walk would lead to a two-run homer by junior first baseman Mulivai Levu for his seventh home run of the season. The Bruins opened the fourth with another homer and tacked on two more runs over the course of the inning to go up 5-0.
The Bruins followed up their consecutive scoring innings with no hits in the fifth and sixth with three batters striking out looking. Reddemann continued to make life difficult for Iowa with a hit and a walk leading no where in the fifth and no base runners in the sixth.
Reddemann's time on the mound was done shortly into the seventh and Iowa took full advantage of it with a two-run homer sending them flying home. UCLA's lead was cut to three heading into the final stretch of the game.
Neither team was able to get batters home in the eighth and UCLA's struggles at the plate continued in the ninth. The Hawkeyes were able to get the bases loaded with an error and two walks setting them up with a chance to walk out with a win. However, with two outs on the board, the Bruins sophomore right-handed pitcher Easton Hawk closed out the win with a grounded out hit back to him.
The Bruins will play their second game of the series on Saturday with an anticipated start time of 11 a.m. PT.
