The 2026 AUSL season opened Tuesday with Carolina (1-0) hosting Portland (0-1) at Smith Family Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
The Blaze defeated the Cascade, 4-1, on opening day.
The contest featured two former Lady Vols. Aubrey Leach started at second base for Carolina and went 1-for-4 and recorded two RBIs.
Payton Gottshall pitched one inning in relief for Portland and totaled two pitches (two strikes).
Former Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens did not play in the game for Carolina. She was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2026 AUSL college draft on May 4.
Leach played for the Lady Vols from 2016-19 and was an All-America infielder. She joined Tennessee's coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2021 and was promoted to director of player development in 2024.
Gottshall played for the Lady Vols from 2023-24 after transferring from Bowling Green. She was an All-American, an All-SEC and All-MAC player during her college career.
