Tuesday, June 8 Practice Notes

Dexter Jackson and Duane Starks.

The Arizona Cardinals continued with their second team organized workout of the week on Tuesday morning, but the practice routine involved more game-like situations including a two-minute drill where with one second on the clock, quarterback Josh McCown connected with Anquan Boldin for a Hail Mary touchdown.

“It was hard work out there today,” said Head Coach Dennis Green. “The guys are working very hard. We are trying to do a lot of things we would do during the course of the season and using these last two weeks to do that.”

Joining the team for the morning workout was newly signed quarterback Chris Lewis. Lewis replaces quarterback Preston Parsons who was released early last week, but Green says Lewis will be the fourth string quarterback.

“You need four for training camp,” said Green. “I think we’ve said who the number one is, Josh McCown, number two is Shaun King and number three is John Navarre, and we felt if we were going to have a number four guy, it should be a young guy, a first year player who may make the practice squad or may not, but going in, he’s going to be the fourth guy.”

Cornerback Duane Starks continues to work more in practice to test his reconstructed knee.

“It is time for me to start getting back into the game,” said Starks. “I’ve got about a month and a half left so time is flying by. I’ve got this defense down pretty well because it is similar to what I did back in Baltimore, but I need to get my confidence back. I’m really excited about the defense and how guys have picked their games up.”

Cornerback Renaldo Hill (wrist), defensive end Riall Johnson (groin), linebacker Levar Fisher (knee) and running back Josh Scobey (hamstring) did not practice.

Linebacker Raynoch Thompson and receiver Karl Williams were excused from practice for personal reasons.

The great thing about the Hail Mary to Anquan was that Josh avoided the rush to buy some time for the WR's to get down field. The line of scrimmage was around the defensive 42 yardline. Josh droped back and got flushed out of the pocket to his left. He then juked a defensive end and moved back to where the pocket was. Finally, Josh heaved it up to the endzone where it bounced off a cluster of players into the diving Anquan Bodin's possession. Coach Green and the rest of the offense threw their hands up and were celebrating.

The other play that didn't make the report was a 65 yard (approx) TD pass from McCown to Fitzgerald. McCown hit Fitz on around a 20 yard post. The great thing about it was that when he made the catch, Fitz pulled the "Top Gun" move. When he hit the brakes, the defender flew right by. Then he outraced everyone to the endzone with E. Smith trailing him yelling "take it to the house!" Fitz displayed an awareness for the defenders around him and got to the endzone.

I heard that the Channel 10 photographer got that play on tape. Channels 12 and 3 were there too, but I know for a fact that the Channel 10 got it. You should watch tonight.

I.

Gotta love the YAC.

Let's hope this means we have really good WR's and not really bad DB's :)

CB news

I liked this line from Starks. What I liked most was his comparing out D to the Raven's old defense instead of saying he knew the defense because he has been with the team... this seems like a signifacant and positive change.

Of course, now i want to watch channel 10 news and see if that play is on with Fitz :)

or that our offense couldn't drive the ball the down the field and had to rely on a hail mary which is a once in ten attempts type occurrence (if that)?

The problem is.... some of the over exuberant moderators and their politically correct evaluaton of every little post anymore, is spawning more and more paranoia to match theirs.

Do I feel a Topgun nickname coming on? Mavrick (no too negitive & doesn't fit him) how about Iceman? Ice?

oh good god, can we just have anyone on our team w/o a nickname? how about we let one come naturally during the course of the season?

(though i have always enjoyed the big bang, even if i refuse to call quan such)

I think Fitz is the perfect nick name.
After all, he will be giving opposing defenses "fits' every Sunday afternoon.

I'll take a Hail Mary touchdown before halftime any day!

Exactly. And isnt that why you practice the 2 minute drill, to see if you can get the ball in the end zone within 2 minutes and practice plays like that. I can care less how it happens, as long as they put up 6 points.

What are you talking about? Is it wrong to hear Josh to Quan for a touchdown? I think you need to read my post carefully before you jump on to conclusion. :doi:
