Disney Moving Forward with Toy Story 3
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
November 16, 2004

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Studios is actively moving ahead with its sequel to Pixar Animation's two "Toy Story" movies. The trade says Disney is in the process of setting up a digital animation facility in Glendale that will be used for the production of Toy Story 3.

David Stainton, president of Walt Disney Feature Animation, is developing the sequel, as is Andrew Millstein, who headed the company's now-shuttered animation facility in Orlando and has already begun the process of recruiting animation heavyweights from rival animation studios and effects shops.

Disney chief executive Michael Eisner said in October that Disney was actually working on two new sequels in the "Toy Story" series at the same time. "We're doing two 'Toy Stories' at once," Eisner said.

A spokeswoman for Disney elaborated at that time, saying, "They're working on different story ideas with the hopes there will be a 'Toy Story 3' and another after that."

While I'm not surprised they're working on a part 3 and beyond, it is surprising that they are not involving Pixar--perhaps this signals the definite end to their partnership.

Hanks Hesitates to Commit to 'Toy Story 3'

Wed, Nov 17, 2004, 02:11 PM PT
By Hanh Nguyen

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) -
The toys are back in town, but Woody may sound a little different.

Although Walt Disney Studios intends to begin developing a third installment to Pixar's "Toy Story" franchise, Tom Hanks may not return to lend his voice to the lead cowboy doll.

At a recent press conference, the Oscar winner expressed doubts about doing a third "Toy Story."

"I don't know. The creative team that put together the original 'Toy Story' movies was very specific and quite organic ... to the success of the process -- not that there aren't other talented people that would be involved," says Hanks. "That would be a bridge to cross when I come to it."

Pixar CEO Steve Jobs and executive VP John Lasseter, who also wrote and directed the first two "Toy Story" films, aren't keen on yet another follow-up that might change the integrity of the "Toy Story" characters.

With Pixar planning to end its distribution relationship with Disney -- which holds the rights to make "Toy Story" sequels -- after 2005's "Cars" is released, Disney is looking for a way to continue the CGI-animated box-office magic. The studio is setting up its own digital animation facility in Glendale, Calif., to produce "Toy Story 3."

The original 1995 film introduces Woody (Hanks), a little boy's favorite toy -- until the new astronaut doll Buzz Lightyear enters the picture. The second installment centers on Woody's abduction by a toy collector who wants to put the doll on display in a museum. Both projects grossed approximately $437.5 million at the domestic box office.

Hanks, 48, currently appears in Warner Bros.' holiday film "The Polar Express." He's also considered the frontrunner to play the lead in the big-screen adaptation of Dan Brown's best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code."

This movie looks like another Disney dud.

Bradley Raymond Directing Toy Story 3
Source: The Business of Animation
March 14, 2005

Bradley Raymond will direct Toy Story 3, which Walt Disney Pictures is planning for a 2008 theatrical release. Raymond previously helmed direct-to-DVD/video Disney titles The Lion King 1½ and The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.

Disney Feature Animation is making the third film without Pixar and basing the next installment on a script by young writer Jared Stern. Stern developed a story idea for the long-in-the-works "TS3" on spec while a member of Disney's Feature Animation Writing Program.

Stern's new take is expected to advance the "Toy Story" franchise by taking the characters on the road and out of Andy's room. Stern is also understood to have invented a couple of new characters for the next installment.

It will be interesting to see which stars return to voice characters.

Without Hanks and Allen attach to this film, this movie will bomb JMHO.

Allen will do it. It's instant money for him. The way his career is going, he'd be an idiot NOT to do it.

Hanks, however, well, he can afford to show some loyalty to Pixar.

Toy Story 3 Cancelled
Source: Animated News, DJW
January 26, 2006

With Disney's acquisition of Pixar, Pixar President Ed Catmull was named President of the new Pixar and Disney animation studios and Pixar Executive Vice President John Lasseter is the new Chief Creative Office of the animation studios, as well as Principal Creative Advisor at Walt Disney Imagineering.

According to a poster at Animation Nation, Catmull and Lasseter "announced to Feature Animation employees [Tuesday] that the 'Toy Story 3' production will end effectively [Tuesday]. They said that sequels should only be made if there is a really great story that demands it, and should be the domain of those who created the original film."

An Associated Press article from Tuesday about the acquisition confirms the news:

One immediate sign of Lasseter's influence is that plans for Disney to make the long rumored sequel "Toy Story 3" on its own have been scrapped. If the film is made, it will be done by Lasseter and the other creators of the original film, the companies said.

Bradley Raymond was announced as the director of Toy Story 3, which was scheduled to open in 2008. In the film, Buzz Lightyear would have been recalled to Taiwan after a series of malfunctions. Learning of a productwide recall, all the toys in Andy's room, under Woody's leadership, were to head to Taiwan to save Buzz from doom.

Toy Story 3 is in Production
Source: Business Week, Bloomberg
May 10, 2006

The Walt Disney Company reported its second quarter and six months results on Tuesday (full details here) and Chief Executive Robert Iger also gave an update on Toy Story 3 in a conference call.

Iger revealed that Walt Disney Pictures has started production on Toy Story 3, but no release date has been set for the third installment. The studio may also do other sequels of Pixar films.

After Disney acquired Pixar, Pixar took over production of Toy Story 3, which Disney's in-house animators had been working on.

Toy Story 3 Coming in 2009
Source: Variety
February 8, 2007

Toy Story 3 is coming in 2009, but John Lasseter won't be the director, reports Variety.

Lasseter and Disney Animation president Ed Catmull provided extensive details on their upcoming slate at the Mouse House's investor conference Thursday.

In addition to confirming for the first time that a third "Toy Story" is in the works, most likely for 2009 release, Lasseter said Lee Unkrich will helm it with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen returning as the voices of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

Unkrich co-directed Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo but has never before been sole helmer on a Pixar film.

Lasseter directed the first two "Toy Story" films.

Michael Arndt, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Little Miss Sunshine, is writing the script.

This movie would have been a huge mistake if Disney had done it without Pixar. Now that Pixar is basically running the animation side of things, we should see some better Disney films in the coming years. Toy Story 3 is a great idea and probably would have happened sooner if not for the rift prior to the merge.

It's not like Hanks or Allen need the money by any stretch so I was glad to hear they were coming back.

that cocaine's not gonna buy itself!

Wasn't that like from 1978?? At any rate, the royalties that he is receiving from his show will last much longer then he will if it's still an issue. Not to mention he got a fat percentage of the syndication rights. He's not hurting for money.

It's interesting how all these old Disney movies are getting sequels. I sort of like it but I don't like how they have to mess with the classics.

That's a relative term. He's no Tom Hanks when it comes to the earning department.

I don't think I suggested that he was. However, Tim Allen won't be hurting for money in his lifetime. There is money and then there is sick money a la Hanks. Doesn't mean Allen isn't loaded and didn't get some major coinage from his show plus royalties.

:stupid:

Salaries

  • "Home Improvement" (1991) $1,250,000/episode (1998-1999 season)
  • Toy Story (1995) $50,000
  • Toy Story 2 (1999) $5,000,000
  • Joe Somebody (2001) USD$12,000,000
Plus, God only knows what he got for The Santa Clause movies, Shaggy Dog, and I would bet he got a pretty penny for his book, "Don't Stand Too Close To A Naked Man." Tim Allen isn't in Tom Hanks' world, but he has more money than I could ever dream of spending.

But it's not more money than ANYONE could ever dream of spending.

Look, when I made my original comment, it was tongue in cheek. But, the fact is multi millionaires spend ALL of their money a lot.

Look at Jocko. Look at Tyson. Would have said the same thing about their income?

True enough. Is it hard to talk with your tongue in your cheek?
