If the Cardinals gave this guy a six year deal worth $22.5 million with a $5 million signing bonus, would you have liked the signing?

That averages to 3.75 million per so no I wouldn't have been upset. At least that would have been SOMEBODY and he instantly would have been the best DT on the team. Everyone at ESPN keeps talking about this guys tremendous upside, and he's young.

ED B is gonna be pi$$ed.

We don't need to just sign SOMEBODY, we need to use our money wisely. I would like an upgrade at DT, but I don't know that Thornton is that much of an upgrade, especially at that cost.

We have so many holes right now, that every signing we make will have to work out right. If it isn't a desperate need, we should over look it for now, or just fill it through the draft. We could draft a tackle that is better than Thornton this year if we choose to.

I'm not sure how bad we are at DT anyways. Tanner and Bell are pretty decent, and Bryant now will have a full training camp under his belt. You have those, along with Vanden Bosche and hopefully Colvin and I think you have a decent line.

Thornton was down my list of priorities. I mean, it'd have been nice to sign him. Those numbers are maybe a tad high, but that's what it would take to get him here. Realistically though, the priorities are Colvin and Stewart or Blake. And they should be. Bidwill only has so much bonus money to lay out up front. If 5 mil to Thornton meant having to give up on a vet QB, or a good LB or S, then I don't think that would've been the way for us to go.

Besides, the last DT that Cincy stole from us with a big bonus a few years back was Tom Barndt. They did us a favor with that one, maybe they helped us out again.

Decent, but if we add Okeafor and if DJ improves, our line could be much better.

Imagine

OLB- Ray Thompson/ Levar Fisher
LDE- KVB/ Fred Wakefield
LDT- Wendell Bryant/Marcus Bell
RDT- Barron Tanner/Marcus Bell/ Nate Dwyer?
RDE- Chike Okeafor/ Dennis Johnson/ Alton Moore?
OLB- Roosevelt Colvin/ La Var Woods/ Greg Jones?
MLB- Ronald McKinnon/ Michael Young/ Trev Faulk?
CB- Duane Starks/ Renaldo Hill
CB- David Barrett/ Renaldo Hill
FS- Adrian Wilson/ Michael Stone?
SS- Justin Lucas/ Quentin Harris

That lineup looks better than last year, and that wouldn't even account for possible draft picks. More pass rush from this group and a lot of speed ( a little on the slight side). This group could use another safety, corner, and a tackle (probably) though.

Yeah, he sure did pan out! ....good call.

John Thornton, would have been more of a luxury. He would have given us a quality rotation guy, but not a front line talent at tackle.:D

ROTATION GUY?

I said it before and I'll say it again. Thornton would have instantly been the best tackle on the team. He is already very good and his upside is better than any tackle we have (even Bryant).

Tanner, Bell, Dwyer etc. couldn't sack a mannequin.

And if you don't think upgrading the worst pass rush in the league and one of the worst run defenses is a priority............

I can maybe see you're point if you're saying use the money on Colvin, Okeafor etc. but Thornton could have been had also. That's not much money.

Imagine Bryant, Thornton, KVB, and Holliday as the down 4.

Ed B is gonna be pissed.

We Must Have Impressed the Hell Out of Him

Boy! That's what I call having your ear to the ground. Dude visits us, says great things about wanting to be here and immediately signs a deal with another team the same day. Our front office must have really been plugged into the loop on that one.

krang..trying to speculate here..I think we will (one way or another) get five new starters from free agents and a 1st round pick who were not on our roster last season.. If we draft a qb in the 1st round - then our #6 pick will not be a projected starter.. So - at least 6 new starters (guys who were not on our roster last year).

you have a defensive end and a linebacker in the above analysis. we will obviously be getting a wide receiver and quarterback starter..

question marks: new fullback starter? new center? I doubt we will bring in a new center.. I bet we move kendall to center and dishman is our guard (along with some backup depth). So we will probably add 2 more defensive starters to your above list (in addition to the 2 you have already filled). I think we will add a safety and a defensive tackle (unless we do something like draft newman).

the point of all of this: we have brought in only 1 safety and 1 dtackle who already signed elsewhere. Safety has alot of availability this offseason..dtackle is pretty thin. I am trying to figure out why we have not brought in more players at both positions..

YES...that is crazy!

Although I did want us to take Thornton in rd 2 a few years ago...I think we took Rutledge instead, he is not worth that contract, IMO.

No, I'll be alright :)

At that price, I'd pass. That's overpaying for a guy who only gets 2 or 3 sacks a year and is a good but not awesome run stuffer.

Man I don't know why you think Thornton is sooooo great.

As I said he is a rotation guy who will get you a measly 2 sacks a year, not exactly an all world tackle, ESPECIALLY at NEARLY 4 MILLION PER YEAR. The Bengals OVERPAID. We might as well have signed BARRON TANNER FOR THAT KIND OF SUM, since Barron is about as good.

(by the way Marcus Bell had just as many sacks as Thornton in a 1/4 as many starts (4 games) and Tanner had just as many in 8 starts)

Signing 2-3 guys to start will improve our front seven, but if you think we can actually have a really good defense you've been smoking something. Thornton would have strengthend our rotation, but only a little bit, and not worth even close to 3.75 million.....

Thornton is a very good player but he sure as hell isn't a Pro Bowler or anything, we have a very similar guy in Marcus Bell who may be just as good in another year or two. I would think Thornton might be worth $2.5 million to the right team but certainly no more. Cincy overpaid but Thornton and Oliver Gibson are gonna make it real, real hard to run up their middle.

GOOD!:D I'm just getting sick of people getting all bent out of shape because we haven't signed anyone. Thornton would've be a good signing at about 2.25 million per season or less.

We have the money to do what we want, but we shouldn't pay people twice their worth.

I completely agree. This was a danny snyder move. No way is thorton worth this much.. If he is, 40% of the dl are worth that in this league.

I liked this guy but I was thinking 2-2.5 mill a year tops. Not 3.75.

I'm glad we passed.

When you read news reports of what it takes to land some of these guys, holliday for3-4 a year, colvin for 5 a year.

Whether or not they get a little more isn't my concern, my concern is, that thorton got 3.75 and isn't 1/2 the player of these 2, and his salary is right next to theirs.

Like I've said before if you are looking at filet mignon and chuck steak and their prices are 3.49/lb for chuck and 3.99 for filet, what will you buy?

With these ludicrous contracts, teams are going to use up all their cap, and there will still be alot available...But we need get one of the top tier in here before they're gone, we can bargain shop later, lets get colvin now.
