SMB/Starling Thomas: Out for the year before game 1

Max Melton/Garret Williams: Serious looking knee injuries, would not be surprised if Williams is out for the year and Max is out for 2 months.

Will Johnson: Groin injury, looks like an IR stint is likely.

There's a lot riding on the upcoming injury report, if things are as serious as they looked, this season is over. Winning in the NFL always comes down being the best team with the fewest injuries. No team that gets an entire position group decimated wins anything. We're more likely to pick top 5 than to make the playoffs.

There isnt a single winnable game on the schedule if Denzel Burke/Kei'Trel Clark/Elijah Jones are our starting CBs.

disagree.
we have good depth...and lots of young guys who can still get better.
unfortunate? absolutely.
season wrecker?? Hell naw...
because the worst case scenario is that Rallis has to dial up a blitz for passing situations...and that served us just fine the past couple years....and we have better dogs in the trenches this year to make them more effective.
injuries suck. They really suck for young guys trying to adapt to the pro game. But injuries in the secondary....well, for this squad...are not a thrreat...if we had to pick a unit to beat up on it would be the defensive backfield.

Whistling past the graveyard.

Blitzing without cover corners means there are openings all over, which is a recipe for disaster. (IMO)

The blessing in disguise. You don't know what you have until they are forced to play. Kurt Warner didn't play at an all pro level until Trent Green got hurt.

I tend to agree with the OP. When you lose your top three pointers in one game, possibly two for the season and one for a long stretch of time you’re in big trouble.

And that’s only assuming we don’t have any more injuries in the group of 15 more games to go, which is highly unlikely….

It’s an awful stroke of bad luck and it truly sucks because he’s probably right. The season is likely “over”

don't forget jt's hamstring - grabbing at it in the second half but ended up leading the team in tackles so... pretty significant

Injuries happen to every team. Everyone is dealing with them. The season isn't over until the Cardinals are officially eliminated from the playoffs.
Nice pep talk… but no other team is dealing with an entire position group being decimated just not factual

I am 90% sure Garett Williams and Max Melton are season ending injuries.

Yes it is bad, but Elijah Jones and Burke playing well might make them survivable.

Honestly the way the team has played the first 2 games, I don't think the team is going anywhere anyway.

Fans always say this, then decide that its the coaches fault when the F team looks terrible. The "young guys" behind our top 5 CB options would be by far the worst CB group in the league. No team has enough depth to win with all backups starting at a position for more than a couple games. There is no scheme solution to not having real NFL talent on the field, blitzing a lot is actually the worst thing a defensive coordinator could do in this situation.

Every team deals with injuries, the teams that deal with the fewest injuries for the longest are always in the playoffs. That is how this sport works. An entire position group eliminated? CBs 1-5 gone? You're done. Having serviceable players as your 6-8th option would be a miracle.

What was the difference between the 12-5 2023 49ers and the 6-11 2024 49ers?

Where I disagree is when you lose your top 5 starting CBs. Basically having to play with CB6 and CB7 as your starters puts you at an extreme disadvantage. And if not over, your margin for error is decreased significantly.

I’m assuming we’re gonna be signing two street cornerbacks at some point this week…

I’m not versed enough in the entire league to know is there any cornerbacks worth signing off some other teams practice squad? Much like Rasul Douglas when the Packers took him from us and he performed admirably?

That’s Monti’s job and it’s maybe where he’s performed the best.

The Niners were so decimated at WR to begin the season they had to go out and spend assets to bring in Sky freaking Moore and then signed Marquis Valdes-Scantling right before the season. Not to mention they just picked up Kendrick Bourne off the street last week.
