You can't build around Orton, he is a decent stopgap and that is it....so no he isn't worth anything higher than a 4th round pick IMO.

We need a solid stop gap QB for the next 4 years until we can develop one of our own. If Andrew Luck is worth 3 1st rounders, Kyle Orton's proven 3,653 yards and 20 touchdowns in 13 games are are worth a top 3rd round pick.

I know I would give up a 3rd pick (at least) to not experience another year like this last one.

I don't really know what to think about Orton. Out of the current NFL QB's that will be available he's probably the best, yet I don't want to give up alot for him. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense either because he'd definitely improve the offense but I, for some reason, wouldn't want to give up anything more than a later round pick for him.

Just think if we don't get Orton then DA is your starting QB next season. Gun to your head what do you do. I give up a good draft pick or say "Make my day and pull the trigger and put me out of my misery".

Not completely because DA will be cut, not sure what the difference it but I think DA is getting a decent buck.

Ortons hit is 8.4 Mil.
Anderson Cap savings is 3.35M.

Thats an increase of 5.05M if we sign Orton.

Thanks for the info. Are you suggesting that the 5 mil isn't worth it?

If the Cards host one playoff game how much does that increase revenue for the year? If the Cards don't suck out loud like this year how many season ticket holders will be retained? How much extra in apparel sales etc.

Some teams don't take as big a hit financially during down years because they have a history of success and a loyal fan base. The Cards are not in that position at this point so they stand to lose a lot more if they don't get this turned around soon.

DA will not be our starting qb next year. I am not sure DA will start anywhere again ever.

Well, yes and no. I DO want the cards to have an eye on a bigger prize at the position, but I think Orton is a guy that could be there for the team as they ride the rapids of looking for the next big thing. You get a guy like Bulger (or the aforementioned QBs) an your window is REALLY small.

Plus, this team has so many needs--but because of the division is SO close to making the playoffs--I think it's important to hedge the bets at the QB position.

Orton is better than people give him credit for, and by all accounts he's good in the locker room, too.

The Titans finally released there big QB yesterday. I wonder if change of scenery would help him or us. He is sort of like a Newton with his size and running ability. Since they released him there would be no loss of personnel or draft spots. He may be a dud but I never watch him so have no idea of how he has been doing.

That is interesting, Young and Newton, Young could start right away, then we wait for the mental breakdown, and bam! Go Cam!:)
The scarey part would be having the drama known as Vince Young around Newton. I imagine Newton would think Young was just self centered and plum crazy, but what if it rubbed off on Cammy? Plus we got Whiz, no way he goes in with Young, Newton, and Skelton after the 2010 season.
Orton would be cool, Kolb would be better. Newton would be the bomb.

Go Newton if possible. I wouldn't mind seeing Newton and Skelton on the roster next year along with an experience vet as a backup.

Newton is going to be one of those guys that coaches hate in practice, but once he is on the field in a game, he will be a game changer.

Can we get real here?

Bringing in a veteran is no panacae.

Most of the guys we can bring in are guys we can't win with.

We got lucky with Warner. And remember, he was brought in as "veteran Leinart insurance." It just turned out that he was able to resurrect some of the insane skills he utilized to get the Rams to the Super Bowl. If we hadn't brought him in during the middle of a game to relieve Leinart and run the no-huddle offense, we'd never have known what he actually had left in the proverbial tank.

How often is that likely to happen? Most veteran free agents will lack enough aspects of the skill-set needed to consistently move an NFL offense down the field and punch it into the end zone frequently enough.

So the first thing you look for are "those veterans who can still do it" (which will eliminate roughly 90% of the guys out there) and then hope the guy you brought in still has enough in his bag of tricks to do it for you. Many times, you guess wrong (We guessed wrong with Anderson). We did good with Kurt W. You roll your dice and take your chances.

I'm both wondering and guessing - What will Skelton and/or Bartel be like with an entire off-season and training camp worth of work under their belts - could they improve by 10%? 15%? 25%? Would it be enough to win with? (My gut says "possibly"). Certainly, the standard for any veteran we'd bring in would have to be that they'd open the season performing better than either Skelton or Bartel. Otherwise, why make the move?

Final note - The one QB out there who fascinates me is McNabb because - as a future season-saver he can go either way. By this I mean: (1) we know he's had an excellent set of skills in the past, (2) was reportedly badly out of shape (& perhaps done) in his final year in Philly and this past year in Washington raising (c) the question of whether or not he could somehow get his act together and get in shape for one last Warner-like hurrah.

(Maybe we could kidnap him at his home in AZ and cart him off to John Lott's house for the duration).

Chicago traded Orton for a QB that has worked out well. If we were proactive we would be on the phone and evaluating possible QBs starting two weeks ago. We act much to slowly . I recall one year when we could not make a decision because Mr. B was in Europe. Apparently we do not use phones. I like your idea about McNabb but wonder if the Cards would pay him what he will command? A number of teams will be looking for QB, so I think they will not come cheap. Statistically you have a much better chance of getting a good QB in the first round of the draft so do we take one in first round or not? Look for the Cards to do the unexpected such as trading down. Newton seems to be moving up on the draft boards. Some even have him ahead of Luck. If we so choose we will have a shot at a projected decent QB. After all is said and done I go after a QB first. We have no QBOTF on our team and you have to start somewhere and sometime. Most teams have better backups than we have starters. We have some excellent young QBs in the league who have only been out of college for 1-3 years. We need one of those now not two or three years from now. Is Vince Young worth a go? He was just released yesterday by the Titans. College kids who are Juniors have to declare around the middle of this month their intentions. Luck my not even come out which makes no sense as how can you be any better than being the first guy taken in the draft and also being a QB. I doubt he would even accept the Cards much like Elway or Manning did when they refused to go to the teams that would draft them. I really do no like that as it keeps teams on the bottom from improving and making the league not so lopsided. That is the way it is so I guess we have to live with it. Eli is not the QB I thought he would be anyway. He certainly is no Peyton.
