The Arizona Cardinals under a month away from the start of training camp and the players are off until July 22. There are a few things that ideally will be done before then, but one thing stands out as the most important.
The most important thing the Cardinals need to do is resolve the contract situation of quarterback Jacoby Brissett, one way or another.
It is the big cloud hanging over the offseason.
Brissett, the presumed starter, wants to be paid like a starter and wants more than the $1.5 million in guarantees he is due in 2026. He held out of the offseason program except for minicamp, and he never took any practice reps.
He had career highs in passing yards and touchdown passes, but the Cardinals went 1-11 in the 12 games he started.
They signed Gardner Minshew and drafted Carson Beck, so Brissett doesn't really have leverage in negotiations.
While other teams have been improving, the Cardinals have a contract dispute with a career backup in Brissett. It is an embarrassment.
Before July 22, one of things needs to happen — either they give him the raise he wants, they up his guarantees or they simply say no and tell him there is no guarantee of starting.
No matter how it ends, it needs to end. This isn't something that can carry on in training camp.
