The Arizona Cardinals are now off until training camp begins on July 22, and there is one lingering question for the team — will there be a new contract for quarterback Jacoby Brissett?
Brissett, after starting 12 games for the Cardinals in 2025 and reportedly being informed he is expected to be the starter, is seeking more money, as he would like to be paid like a starting quarterback. He stayed away from the team during the voluntary part of the offseason program. He reported for mandatory minicamp, but he did not do any on-field work.
He and the Cardinals are reportedly significantly apart in talks.
Will that change before training camp?
Head coach Mike LaFleur was asked about it, but he didn't have much to say.
"Conversations are ongoing like they have been," he said. "That's all I can give you guys on that, and we'll see where it goes."
Of course, LaFleur is not the one in negotiations with Brissett. That would be the job of general manager Monti Ossenfort.
LaFleur is surely aware of where things are, but his job is preparing guys already in the locker room and on the field. He doesn't handle contracts.
It certainly would make things better for him. Not having Brissett in the building doesn't give him a true picture of the quarterback room. LaFleur hasn't seen Brissett take a single rep in his offense. Sure, he can trust Brissett will be able to learn it because this is his 11th NFL season, but the only evaluation he has been able to do
When July 22 rolls around, it will be better for everyone to have the contract dispute resolved. Whether it is more money, more guarantees, him simply accepting his contract as-is, a release or a trade, this is a headache that needs to be ended.
