Is Jacoby Brissett the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback? According to offseason reports, that is what he was told, which has led to him holding out for a new contract.
However, new head coach Mike LaFleur isn't trying to add or take away speculation.
After he canceled the final practice of mandatory minicamp and spoke to reporters, he was asked who was his QB1 at that. He wouldn't say if there was one.
"Not really concerned about QB1 right now," he said. "I'm concerned about these guys all reporting on July 22 (for training camp). (I'm) really more concerned about the next 40 days and what these guys are doing to continue. You can't take steps backwards. That's not the quarterback. That's all these guys. So literally, my only focus."
Brissett started 12 games last year to end the season. Kyler Murray was released. Gardner Minshew, who has 47 career starts, was signed in free agency and Carson Beck was drafted in the third round.
What most want to hear is that the job is wide open and will be determined in training camp. But this is as close to that as we can get. LaFleur just isn't even thinking about it. And how can he? He hasn't seen Brissett take a single offseason rep. He doesn't know how he will look in the offense.
The Cardinals will report for training camp on July 22. Maybe Brissett will have a new contract. If not, perhaps we will see an open competition for the starting job.
