A handful of fairy tales from the story bag...
One Battle After Another wins? Over Sinners? Idiotic Oscar biases rise to the top. Joke awards, man. Just a plain joke.
You hated One Battle that much? Wow. I get wanting Sinners to win, but this is over the top.One Battle After Another wins? Over Sinners? Idiotic Oscar biases rise to the top. Joke awards, man. Just a plain joke.
Nope. Haven't seen it yet though it's on the list. It was a niche movie that seemed to only get Oscar buzz because the handful of influencers that seem to move the needle on the awards seasons started talking it up. FWIR, it was just kind of a big budget niche movie for a couple months, then suddenly the Oscars whispers started. But, clearly, most of my opinion here is based on the fact that Sinners was far and away superior, as a piece of art as much as for movie entertainment, than anything I've seen in a long, long time. It's also the biggest middle finger the academy has ever given a horror movie. You hated One Battle that much? Wow. I get wanting Sinners to win, but this is over the top.

When certain major genres of movies have absolutely zero chance of ever winning an Oscar despite their superiority, the Oscars are a joke.
I am now stepping down from my hobby horse![]()
Yup. And Sean Penn over Delroy Lindo? One Battle After Another wins? Over Sinners? Idiotic Oscar biases rise to the top. Joke awards, man. Just a plain joke.
Yup. And Sean Penn over Delroy Lindo?
The Best Song cut off was cruel.Cutting off the Best Song winners after like 30 seconds, but wasting 5 minutes on a lame Bridesmaid skit was awful.
Sound issues were a problem as well.
True - I would have been fine with Del Toro winning as wellPenn over anyone was a joke. Benicio outshined him in his own movie.
Apparently it was the first time Barbara has sung that song in public in 15 years. On the positive side, the In Memoriam segment was very well done.
From starting with Rob Reiner done by Billy Crystal and many of the actors he worked with, to ending with Barbra speaking about (and singing) to Robert Redford, very well done.
A nice transition was from Graham Greene to Val Kilmer - first pictures of just Graham, then one with the two together from Thunderheart, then to just Val was well done
After no showing, the Academy and its voters should never vote for Penn again. It’s just spitting in the face of the other candidates who would all cherish the moment.True - I would have been fine with Del Toro winning as well
Yet you felt the need to let everyone know...Haven’t watched this in years, better time watching WBC Sunday night
Your problem is you are making too many assumptions. To Chap and Cheese, here's a question for you: If a movie the quality of Sinners wasn't a horror movie, would you still think it totally cool to overlook in favor of One Battle? Another question: Is it as profound and as important a movie as Sinners?
It's clear, crystal clear, the Hollywood elite snobbery "Horror movies aren't serious movies" biases were in play. I'll eventually watch One Battle, which didn't look interesting, but I got interested when I heard about it's heavily left political commentary. I cannot imagine loving it and marveling at it as much as at Sinners.
So do you think a horror movie ever has a shot of winning? If so, how much, much better than any other movie would it have to be. Do you honestly think there are no biases against horror movies in the Academy?Your problem is you are making too many assumptions.
Assumption #1: One Battle isn’t as good a movie as Sinners. You’ve admitted you haven’t even seen it, so how do you know?
Assumption #2: Sinners is much more profound and important than One Battle (or any of the nominees for that matter).
Assumption #3: The only reason it lost was because it’s a horror movie.
None of those assumptions can be proven. I loved Sinners, but do I think it’s some great milestone of cinema? No. It’s good and deserved to even win, but it doesn’t mean that nobody else deserves to win either. My heart was set on Hamnet personally, but so what?
And again, you haven’t even SEEN the actual winner! Your bias is so extreme though, that we all know you’re going to hate it because it beat Sinners.
One Battle After Another wins? Over Sinners? Idiotic Oscar biases rise to the top. Joke awards, man. Just a plain joke.
But if a Horror movie was to win, yes, it would have to be really, really good, probably significantly so. That is the case for all awards shows, not just the Oscars. It's one of the reasons the Golden Globes started the Best Musical/Comedy award. I don't see the Oscars doing that though. So do you think a horror movie ever has a shot of winning? If so, how much, much better than any other movie would it have to be. Do you honestly think there are no biases against horror movies in the Academy?
I get it. You (and probably Cheese) will defend them tooth and claw. Its one of your industry standards, so it holds great import for you. Look at it from the outside, though. Give that a shot.
I don't think so, but it's got PLENTY to say politically speaking as well.To Chap and Cheese, here's a question for you: If a movie the quality of Sinners wasn't a horror movie, would you still think it totally cool to overlook in favor of One Battle? Another question: Is it as profound and as important a movie as Sinners?
again, how can you say this when YOU'VE NEVER SEEN ONE BATTLE. How can ANYTHING be crystal clear when you've got no frame of reference? This is the dumbest argument I've ever seen. People have different opinions - some people have been hailing One Battle as the movie of the decade. I think that's NUTS, but that narrative IS out there. It's clear, crystal clear, the Hollywood elite snobbery "Horror movies aren't serious movies" biases were in play.
dude... a horror movie has won before. The Silence Of The Lambs did back in the 90s.So do you think a horror movie ever has a shot of winning?
WTF? You're an idiot. We've done no such thing. If so, how much, much better than any other movie would it have to be. Do you honestly think there are no biases against horror movies in the Academy?
I get it. You (and probably Cheese) will defend them tooth and claw.
how about you actually watch the other movie that won so you could have a frame of reference for the conversation? Give that a shot instead of accusing me and Chap of simping for the Oscars (especially since I already said I thought Sinners should have won). Its one of your industry standards, so it holds great import for you. Look at it from the outside, though. Give that a shot.
Except for leaving out at least 8 people who should have been included...On the positive side, the In Memoriam segment was very well done.
