Thanks DWKB, a very readible, entertaining and common sense explanation of the Bill James approach to baseball. BTW I agree with pretty much all of what he said.

I still don't know that I agree with the sac bunt or steal analysis. I've just yet to see an argument, statistical or otherwise that persuades me against what intuitively makes sense. A guy on the second through a bunt or a steal is only one base hit away from scoring. A guy on first requires two base hits. The number of times a guy gets stranded on first base (never makes it home) seem greater than the outs he makes by stealing or being bunted over. Even batting .300 only results in hits 3 times out of ten, so it seems like you are more likely to get a score once you only need one hit. A leadoff double seems a lot more likely to score than a lead-off single (though I've not seen numbers on it).
