Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby plans to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Per reports, the Miami Dolphins should be interested in his services.
The decision comes after ongoing legal battle with the NCAA regarding his collegiate eligibility, after Sorsby admitted to placing thousands of illegal sports bets totaling over $90,000 across fours years. As such, Sorsby has decided to the enter the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft, which takes place in July. It is separate summer draft for college players who missed the standard spring draft’s filing deadline, or whose collegiate eligibility was impacted after the deadline.
Draft order is determined by lottery, though teams are split into three tiers:
- Teams with six wins of less
- Remaining non-playoff teams
- Playoff teams
Rather taking turns, teams submit secret bids stating which round they would use to select a specific player. If multiple teams submit a bid for the same round, the player’s rights go to the team holding the highest slot in the weighted lottery order. If a team selects a player, they will forfeit that pick in the following year’s draft.
As it relates to the Dolphins, Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today has named the Dolphins one of the best landing spots for Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby, reporting that “Jon-Eric Sullivan is no stranger to investing in QBs early and often, and then allowing them to sit…Sullivan might have more of an appetite than most for Sorsby’s skill set.”
Certainly, at least on the field, Sorsby is a fantastic prospect. He stands at 6’3, weighs 235 pounds, and threw for 27 touchdowns and 2,800 passing yards in 2025 for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Funny enough, Sorsby never played in a competitive game for Texas Tech, having transferred in 2026 and handed this ruling shortly after.
It’s worth noting that the NFL hasn’t had a player selected in the Supplemental Draft since 2019, when Arizona Cardinals used a fifth-round pick on safety Jalen Thompson. That said, many star players have emerged from the Supplemental Draft, such as Pro Bowl quarterback Bernie Kosar in 1985, Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter in 1987, and All-Pro defensive tackle Jamal Williams in 1998.
