The NFL supplemental draft is expected to be held in mid-July, but will be held only if the NFL accepts Sorsby's application for it.
Players have to apply for eligibility for the NFL supplemental draft. The NFL reviews the applications on an individual basis.
College football players who have lost their eligibility are eligible for the NFL supplemental draft, making Sorsby's case unique as he is currently eligible to play for Texas Tech in the upcoming season after a judge issued an injunction allowing him to play on June 8.
Sorsby reportedly applied to enter the supplemental draft after the Big 12 filed a legal complaint to sanction Texas Tech if it allows Sorsby to play this season on June 14. The NCAA also filed an appeal of the injunction on June 15, putting Sorsby's eligibility in question.
More: Cardinals could now bid on Texas Tech QB Sorsby in supplemental draft
The deadline to enter the NFL supplemental draft is June 22, so Sorsby was getting close to having to make a decision about attempting to play for Texas Tech in 2026 or trying to move on to the NFL.
NFL teams blindly bid on players in the draft using the next season's draft picks, with the highest bid getting the player.
For example, if one team were to bid a second-round pick on Sorsby and no one else bid that high of a pick, that team would win the bid for the player, but have to give up its second-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
If a player isn't picked in the NFL supplemental draft he becomes a free agent and can sign with whichever NFL team he chooses.
