There isn't much college football news, typically, in May or June, but when it does occur it's usually of the legal variety. This time of year, college football headlines usually involve something connected to eligibility concerns, bylaws, protocols, committees or regulations. The protracted saga revolving around Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby falls into some of these descriptions.

But on Monday, we learned how it will conclude- Sorsby is done with NCAA football, and he'll now enter the NFL supplemental draft.

Texas Tech and Sorsby have officially parted ways, due to the fallout over last week's court ruling, which actually went in the favor of the ex-Indiana and Cincinnati quarterback. Sorsby was found to have violated the NCAA's gambling protocols by placing bets on college and pro sports.

According to court documents, Sorsby placed more than 9,000 bets, totaling over $90,000, under accounts registered to family and friends. Nevertheless a judge in Lubbock, Texas granted Sorsby a temporary injunction, which rendered him eligible to play this upcoming season.

However, he was set to be suspended for the first two games of the 2026 season.

Rather than continuing to deal with all this mess (of his own making of course), Sorsby opted for the NFL Supplemental Draft. What is the supplemental draft, you might be asking yourself?

Short answer- a lesser known draft, conducted strictly for players whose eligibility changed after the real NFL Draft. For a more detailed description, see this post on Steelers Wire, which tells us:

"Unlike the highly televised April event, the supplemental draft is a quiet, semi-blind bidding process conducted entirely via email."

2023 marked the last time a supplmental draft was staged, but no one got selected. The last time we saw a player taken in the supplemental draft was 2019.

In the history of the supplemental draft, which dates back to 1977, 46 players have been selected in total. Some of the more notable include Cris Carter, Ahmad Brooks, Josh Gordon, Dave Wilson, Rob Moore, Steve Walsh and Brian Bosworth.

And now we wait to see what happens with Sorsby, who will inspire the most high profile supplemental draft that we have seen in many years.
