A popular quote around the Forty Acres is, "The standard is the standard." Well, the standard in college athletics is the University of Texas. The Longhorns, led by Athletic Director Chris Del Conte, has secured its fifth NACDA Learfield Directors' Cup as the best athletic department in the nation.
The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics awards the prize each season based on results from all of a school's sports teams, men's and women's.
This is the fifth Directorss Cup in six years for UT, all have come under the tenure of Del Conte. The UC Santa Barbara alum has put an emphasis on hiring great coaches and supporting them with all the resources he can muster, from NIL to staff to salary.
UT clinched Friday evening when Texas track finished in 26th place in NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field finals. That was enough to push them to 1291.5 points. Stanford can gain points Saturday in the Women's Outdoor Track Final, but the most the Cardinal can get realistically get to is 1289.5 points. Technically, Stanford could jump ahead of Texas if their women win the meet, but with only two athletes competing in the events, it is not logically possible.
Some of the results that pushed Texas to the trophy were national titles in Women's Softball, Men's Swimming and Diving, and Women's Rowing.
UT was second in Men's Tennis and third in Women's Basketball, Women's Swimming and Diving and Women's Beach Volleyball.
Women's Volleyball, Men's and Women's golf all finished fifth nationally. And baseball isn't even over yet.
Del Conte has turned the University of Texas athletic department into the envy of every school in the country. Since he took over the Longhorns athletic department in 2017, Texas has won 18 national titles. Now, with a fifth Directors' Cup, the Longhorns have arguably the best AD in all of college sports.
